    Wind knocked out

While this is not strictly bike related, I think I may be in the right place to ask this question as the last time I was winded was on a DR400 trying to beat a boy who hated the thought of a girl being in front and hooked my front wheel out from under me.

After the initial recovery, how long before the chest pain stops? Anything I can do to quicken the process? I had a bit of a spill (not on my bike thank God) earlier on today and had the stuffing knocked out of me. I am fine apart from some lumps and bumps that are beginning to make their presence felt as the evening wears on. But I still feel partially winded.

I figure you guys will have experienced this many times, so share, when does this feeling go away?

Trust me, if I am still feeling like this in the morning a trip to the Doc will be in order, never had broken ribs but from what I hear they are extremely painful. I dont have extreme pain, I have mid chest pain constantly, it just feels like I need to take a deep breath, which I can do, so I am not worried about flat lungs or anything. It just hurts and is an effort to draw that deep breath, hence the still winded feeling.

Safer on a bike than hurrying to turn off the water wearing slippers (ka boom tish) when a pipe bursts in the kitchen it seems

I dont want to bash Maha though, and I prefer wine...LOL

I am loving the black golf ball sized lump on my left knee very much too right now. That is next on my list of ouchies. A shower and some arnica is next on my agenda.

    Can you laugh..you know,LOL,,

If not get it checked it out. Unfortunately ribs and collar bones are the first to go snap whilst riding in the dirt.

I have not tried laughing, but I can cough, which I seem to be doing a lot. No, I am sure I have nothing broken, it was a straight out face plant without my face hitting the floor. Came complete with the humpfffffff sound you make when you do get the wind knocked out of you, then you cant actually take a decent breath afterwards. I can breath, I just have that half winded feeling is all.

    HTFU woman......sheesh a slipper accident!!!!!

Seriously, cracked ribs are painfull but I haven't had the winded feeling with them, just sore, doesn't stop you doing anything, broken ribs (apparently) don't hurt as much.

Go see the Doc in the morning to check, it could be a myriad of things, if it gets worserer over night call the ambos......

A bit of armour is good when riding off road .... Perhaps a soothing massage from one close ... the pain may remain but ..... you may not notice .

Sheesh, it's been so long since I had a regular dirt bike my experience as a teenager hurting myself probably isn't relevant now.

But I do recall that a brused sternum gives you this kind of feeling. Broken ribs hurt lots when you are breathing deep, or coughing.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

    Ouch! Poor Mom!

I've had fractured ribs (I believe I bashed them on the Volty's handlebars but I'm not quite sure because I was unconscious by then! ) and they really did hurt to cough and breathe deeply. Mack the Knife told me it would take 6 weeks for the pain to go away and that's exactly what happened.

Yours may be bruised rather than fractured, but personally I would still go and get checked out. It was an accident so ACC will cover you (don't let katman see this ) I reckon its worth getting an xray just for peace of mind.

Meanwhile, do you have any Rescue Remedy? I know a lot of people who swear by that stuff. And also Arnica cream to apply to the bruising and arnica drops that go under your tongue.

    Hope you feel better tomorrow!

Well unfortunately mom, as you get older it take longer to recover, best cure is drink lots of wine plenty of rest, and get maha to give you a back rub
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

It still could be small fractures to several ribs. They heal by themselves however what is most likely is that you have bruised the tissue between them and some of the bits may not be as attached as they should be.

It should all calm down by itself however if it heals badly, it will niggle for ages.

IMO - You need an examination, just to be on the safe side.

prob with going to doc is they will tell you as they did me that 80 to 90% of the time xrays wont show up anything and youll just have to bare the pain asa there is not much they can do part from take your money and say have a nice day. Mine was/is still cracked fine it hard to lie on a hard surface still after 5 weeks but gets better each day. Good luck.
