Smile VTR or RF? Decisions, Decisions?

    What should i get?

    Choice is:

    97 Suzuki RF900RV with 32K miles (52000 kms)

    or

    97 Honda VTR1000 with 75000 kms

I know pros and cons of both, just wanted a seccond opinion before i make my final decision.

Mandownunder had one (RF) and now has the other - he'd probably be a good person to ask.

my only concern on the VTR is the high milage. is the VTR motor strong enough to last for 50-60 K more kms or will i need to be doing a rebuilt very shortly

Keep the RF, it's a sweet bike.

Mine had over 72,000km when I traded it in. Still went really well, but was a little rattly. The camchains and tensioners are a bit of a liability.
I've never ridden an RF, but from what I've heard of them, unless you really want a cheap v-twin (and who wouldn't?), I'd go the RF.

had a look at the vtr. didnt like it. paint was faded, it was rattly and needed new tyre, and chain. will stick with the RF for now

I'd try and aim for a VTR that is year 2003 and after as they recieved much needed changes such as larger fuel tank, LCD display etc...

I've also read on a couple of American SuperHawke forums that the early models suffered premature failure of the camchain tentensioners and cush drives and were surposidly sorted out when the bike recieved the upgrades.

Yep had one of the earlier ones 01, no Cam probs on mine, but I'd go with the recommendations quoted. 75,000 is a 2 many k's in my humble opinion.

BTW: The VTR be a shit load more fun to ride!!!
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!

'Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out! Shouting, ' Holy sh!t... What a Ride!! '

The VTR is indeed very fun to ride though its not an ideal bike for communting in traffic as (with me) can't decide between second or third gear and the tired wrists. The VTR show's its class when on the open road.

I wouldn't buy the VTR for Fuel Economy... but would for fun and reliability, its not a bad all rounder V-Twin sports tourer...

Does depend what you want the bike for though
