I've just been having a look at this:

Looks like a good condition at a very reasonable price (to my untrained eyes). Does anyone have any opinions to offer about these machines?

Looks good. They survive well but need regular oil changes (like anything) and the engine side cover removed to clean the oil screen, They don't have an oil filter. Economical cheap to own and fun. Oh and kickstart only.
Buy it!! But of course have a good look at it first. From the pics it looks genuine and in good condition. And it's a classic with all the charm that comes from that. Park up in a line of 250 CBR's ZXR's, GSXR's etc and I'll guarantee that yours will pull the biggest crowd. You'll get opld guys like mecoming up and saying stuff like "I used to have one of those last century" and you'll be like "great another one!! piss off!!"

Lol, I'd probably be trying to swap it for everyone else's gixxers by persuading them that they want to draw the crowd
But yeah, it looks cheap, low powered and in good condition, I might even be able to afford it this pay day as well so I'll give him a shout this afternoon![]()
Good little bikes and very forgiving for a novice rider,I have one and its been all over the lower north island and have had no trouble commuting from wanganui to wgtn and back again...and was leant too Mrs Cowboyz last summer too learn on....
top open road speed is around the 120kph mark
as for the one on trademe its a fair price at $1300 parts are easily sorced and they are very easy too work on...it looks like it has a cycleworks exhaust system on it.....being kickstart you must remember to flip up the riders footpeg when starting....
Since your in Wgtn PM miss piggy she may still have hers if you want too look at one before going over the hill
Keep the oil fresh and treat them with respect and they are a very good thing.
Cathy rode hers around the south island with ease!
I have one for a racebike for pre '82. They are a pretty reliable solid bike.
A lot of guys love them, I don't really like my one that much. It's been extremely reliable, but I don't find it that exciting.
I prefer something like the Honda CG125. They don't have as much power, but they are much lighter and handle better. You can always upgrade the engine later to one out of an XR200 (Will pretty much bolt straight in) or some people put those Chinese 200cc engines in, these also bolt straight in.

Thanks for the replies guys
I've decided not to go for this one though, not that I think there's anything wrong with the bike, just that I've been thinking about what I want to actually use a bike for. I'm 99% certain that I'll be wanting to get involved with trackdays when I'm feeling more comfortable on 2 wheels so I'm going to save up and spend a bit more on something which I can take to the track once in a while. I've been thinking about CBR's and GSX's as being the kind of thing I'll be after but I'll probably be asking you guys for a LOT of advice when it comes a bit closer to buying time (probably in a couple of months time, in time for my 30th)
KB's resident CB250RS spokesperson, xwhatsit should be along any minute now.....
I probably wouldn't recomend getting a CBR or a GSXR or ZXR or anything for a first bike, as they have lots of fairings and plastic and stuff, and generally everyone crashes their first bike, so if you have a bike with lots of fairings and plastic, it will get really smashed up.
If you have a older bike like a CB250RS, or a CG125, they don't really get too damaged in a crash.
You can always get a basic model to start off with, then say 6 months down the track when you are a bit better at riding you could get something a bit more flash.
