Learners license stuff?

Hi there im new to riding. I wanted to know if anyone knows if i definately need to do a test before going for learners.

Whats the exact name of the course i need to do before i got for my learners licence and does anyone know any good places to do it, if i need to do one, in auckland, north shore area, and prices etc.

Any help would be awesome!

Yep, you do. It's called a basic handling skills test (BHS) and it needs to be done before you can sit the learners scratchy. I can't remember the price but I think it varies depending on what they do. Some places make you practice before sitting it and some you just sit the test IIRC.

Not sure of who does it in Auckland but someone will I'm sure.

Yup, you have to do a basic handling skills test, then a scratch and win before you go out on the road to become road kill. Those more knowledgeable than me (everyone) will advise further.

For your basic handling test try:
- Rider Training NZ (Albany)

Somebody may recommend some other places. Doing the pre-test training and then the test is good if you're new to motorcycling. Try not to wind up the tester before hand and you'll fly through it.

For the scratchy, if you're familiar with the road code then buy a couple of tests from VTNZ a couple of days before hand, run through them, then sit the test. Don't forget to get a motorcycle specific scratchy.

HI I just sat my BHS, and the biggest thing is the emergency stop, so get that right... ok..

shit, 80 bung is heaps, mine was 25, bout 5 years ago though, test is a peice of cake if you've ridden before.

Also, if you already know how to ride and are confident you will pass the test there is generally a "test only" option as opposed to training and the test. I know this is the case in Welly as I sat mine not so long ago! haha, rocked up on my FZR1000 and had to jump on a GN125 to do the test (which was easy)

ahh, thats what i must have done, you was lucky to get a gn125, we only got an old scooter, think it was a zuki jog, no gears, no clutch, no skills required still had one guy fail it though, he couldnt manage a slalom round some cones.

Anyway aside from that, when studying for the learners, do you just study the normal roadcoad, or is there a seperate "motocycle" roadcode to study??

Hi, you need to study the motorcycle road code as well, I got 100% it was that easy.... but do study you don't want to fail, 3 wrong & its a fail.

If you stay on the North Shore there is a young chap that does it in Windsor Park (around Mairangi Bay), behind the MacDonald restaurant, there is a website somewhere if you do a search. I did mine there and was ok.

Basically if you can ride a push bike you will be sweet, the guy will give you training and try everything to make you pass, unless you trashed his bike . Takes about 2 hours total. The bike he uses was a GN125, a slow light machine and easy to handle (you wont even stall it if you let the clutch go in first gear without giving it gas).

If you do it this way make sure you get HEAPS of practice in your backyard before you venture onto the roads- Make sure you are fluent in operating all parts of the bike. (clutch / gear / indicator / brake / hillstart). A failure to stop at a intersection as opposed to a car park can mean life or death...

Or you can go to private tutors and learn slowly. They tend to charge you heaps ($50/ hr) just to lend you the bike and pootle around carpark-but will give you good advice and correct your techniques...etc. A solid but expensive way to learn...

Hey i just thought i'd let all the peeps out there, wanting to go for their learners, ill tell ya. I breezed though it and these are the things i did.

Did the basic handling skills test and training (didnt really need it, but it was a good refresher after 4 years of not being on a bike) but a must for the complete beginner, was about $150 all up (this is the training and test, i think the test by itself is, i thought someone said $80ish?), and if you pass you get the Certificate! I did it through "Rider Skills" in auckland, and the guy that did it, was awesome! Definately recommend them to anyone! whether you've been riding for a bit and wanna get ur licence, or completely new!!!! Rider skills and their nifty lil gn125's....classic

Next was the learners scratchy, and it was easy as(didnt even do any study for it, im not the brightest light in the shed, but it was pretty damn easy, got 3 test scratchies from the desk at AA, did em in my lunch break, came back and sat it at 4pm (last sitting time) Passed that and picked my bike up that night. (The scratchies are an awesome help and guide)

Absoloutely stoked.

Addicted to it after the first ride on my CBR, and its gonna be hard to get me away from it! been riding to work for the past week and its insanly fun! Would sell my car anyday and use the bike, if i wasnt hooked on surfing aswell!!
