    Depends what you call normal?

    *Looks around at Christchurch crowd*

Haven't done the straight to picton thing for quite a while, but if memory serves me correctly it's about 4-5 hours. Although boring as shit, almost as bad as the ChCh to Timaru direct route.

There are lots of back roads though, if you want to enjoy your journey, rather that get there as quick as. Dangerous, Gav, Kickaha, etc, can give heaps of advice as to the routes that will make the journey worth it.

4 or 5 hours non stop.... which means if you want a break every fuel stop then assume a whole day.... and pray for no rain or wind

Its about 330-340km so assume about 3.5hrs running time averaging close to 100 and watching out for cops when you are going a bit over to keep your average up. Stops for tucker or anything else are on top of this. It is a nice easy road on a bike. Obviously best done out of times of busy traffic such as school holidays. I used to like driving the road when I lived in ChCh on quiet nights when the road was lit up well by my car lights and no one else was around. Didn't do it so often on the bike but it it easier to go faster on the bike, hence the word about looking out for cops.

4 - 5 hours mentioned above is that on a 50cc or something as it won't take that long unless you include the stops. I am sure R1AaronKDX could do it in 2 hrs something when no one was looking.

It was 3hrs 25mins in my Hillman Hunter in 1974 before the road was as straight as it is now with max speed of about 125km/hr. Cut that back to 110max like the cops look at you for, plus the shorter straighter road I still reckon 3.5hrs travelling time and staying close to legal.

My last ride northwards on that road on the VFR we left Tekapo in the morning and still got to Picton in the afternoon so no way is ChCh to Picton an all day ride unless you do take all the back roads.
    Cheers

I got a puncture off the ferry one night and had to overnight in Picton. Got it fixed and left at 09:30and was on base at Wigram at 12:30 in a freshly ironed uniform. Headers on the black 4:1 went white 1/2 way to the collector and the tailpipe was white up to the muffler.

Yeah but you were riding Honda's and if we'd gone SH1 it wouldn't have been a problem
