A clutch issue...

The clutch on my '04 kdx200 seems to have a prob,gives a good clunk now when engaging 1st gear,and bike wanting to grab forward slightly with lever pulled in hard to bar,...and with engine stopped and bike in 1st gear,if you again pull the clutch lever hard in to the bar,there is no way i can roll the bike forwards or backwards,its like the clutch makes little difference.

I have the correct amount of lever end play,always had fresh oil of the right grade in the trans,run about 800mls instead of the 700mls it says on the trans case,but cant see this as an issue,as the kdx site says to run it higher.
So,anything i should be on the lookout for when i pull it apart?

look for worn fingers on the clutch basket. if they have ridges this will stop the plates from spreading apart smoothly, esp with the engine running. fairly common 'problem' on most bikes though

As already said cheeck your clutch basket for grovees these can be easily filed down, becarefull taking it off my mate broke his and they are not cheap!

Also most mx bikes cluctches will drag alot when cold this is normal. Mine has always done it and all my mates 450s do it. Unsure what my 125 was like.

Yeah every bike ive had is like this......Warm it up before dropping it into gear is all i do

Even when hot i can still feel it dragging if i push it in gear with clutch in

Here is a weird clutch question, mine is kind of like off or on, there is no (or very little) give. Do you think my plates are on the way out?

ok, does it do it all the time, or just the first time you start the bike in the morning,

if it is the first time it is because the plates are not oiled though and it is quite nromal, the plates have not been spinning so there is no oil flow thourgh there plates and they stick together,

Scott,if that was a reply to my clutch probs,not Cheese's...it does it when hot or cold.Iv'e got it half apart,gonna pull out the basket tonight and put a novices eye over the basket fingers for notches and check out the steel and fibre plates.....

Excuse me. I know I am not an off road type of gal but...

I have just been down the track of something similar with my blue lovely and listen to these wise gents telling you the basket is worn. I would not get stuck in with a file though to clean up the edges on the basket, it is a fragile little thing and most likey very costly to replace. A bit of wet and dry sandpaper ( you will need to change it often) and sand off any grooves in the basket surfaces.

ok, then i would investigate further then,

Cheese - i would check your clutch springs, they may be getting a bit tired, can be made to last longer by spacing them out,

take it apart and have a look.

or just order a new set- from memory it was around $30 if i remember correctly and will save your plates in the long run

The funny thing is its like it on not slipping. It works fine, just very little movement between off and on.

It was doing that when I borrowed it nearly a year ago, made it hard to ride as it really is on or off. Like I said pull it apart then you can check everything out then you can sort/work out the problem.

To be honnest I think that it always has done. Might be the lever set up or something. I'm used to it so I don't really care. Might rip it to bits after this weekend.
