Depends if it is o-ring safe (if you have such a chain). But, is a degreaser strong enough? As I said, a toothbrush and kerosene gets absolutely everything off. Then, wash the chain with whatever you wash the bike with, dry completely and re-oil / re-wax... I think that built up dirt definitely causes extra wear and tear.

I lube my chain every week. I ride daily (just about) and it's parked up outside.

I dont know what happened actually. I figure you were holding up the bike while I undid the belt and the belt just snapped.

I need to get a firewire cable for audio to work I think.

I dont think I've ever lubed an o-ring chain. Most I do is make sure there is no built crud on them. They seem to last longer than the sprockets do anyhow and I always replace them with the sprockets.

Non o-ring chains, I lube - have even been known to give them the odd oil bath - but being a cheap bugger, I just get more off the spool.

Ok, This weekend was a big one in terms of my and my little bike.

woke up friday morning, 7:20 raced over to colemans. picked up sprockets and chain for $120. not too bad.
8:15 arrived at Mt eden motorcycles but the techs dont start till 8:45
8:45 Drop bike off and go kill an hour around. find out awesome place to buy bike paint (carcolors in albany)
10:15 pick up bike. only pay $60! which is freaking awesome considering they did it on the spot and didnt make me wait a week.
Raced to albany and speant $108 on custom paint and primers in spray cans for the bike.
11:30 arrive home and drop off cans. race out to airport to see folks off to england.
1:30 meander home at 120 (no not really, I kept within the speed limit)

2:00 sand of last of paint and spray bike
    4:00 run out of paint.

    Saterday:
9:00 went to Motomail. tried on a dozen plus helmets, 1 fitted which was plain black, quite peeved at this as I was ready to spend $700 or so on one.
10:00 went to colemans again. they did me a good deal on a HJC CL-14 and blue tinted visor ($325)
11:30 over to albany carcolors to pick up some more white primer
12:15 realise that they close at 12:00
1:00 go to repco kelston. buy white primer, finish the white coat and put a few more coats on other parts.
2:00 run out of blue. race over to repco, get blue, coming back I got pulled over cos I past a police car at 88k in a 50k zone cos im a numnuts.

put bike away. the rest I will explain with emoticons cos im a cool intarweb dude.

I only posted this because of the global economic crisis
