How do I take a bike with me to Aussie?

    Hi all

Anyone know how easy or difficult or expensive it is to take a bike over to Aussie?

I'm planning a move there around April time. I currently ride a 250, due to sit my full in Feb and would rather buy a decent bike over here. I'll be buying in NZD for a start, and bikes seem a better price here.

I don't know how long I'll be over there, so importing for personal use seems the best option. Probably several years to indefinite depending on a few things.

Info on the net is fairly scarce or confusing, so just wondered if anyone on here knows anything about it. Appreciate any advice.

Short answer. More cost and trouble than a GT250 or even a better bike is worth.

They want GST for starters and re-registering a vehicle in Aus is a painful bureaucratic process.

Cheers Dave. But I'm thinking more of getting myself a full size to take over.

The 250 will stay here for the next noob to sit out the wait for their full on.

    Hey big Dave,
gotta agree with Tubbsy, ive got a mate who emigrated to Oz from the Uk, he took his bike with him, once it arrived he had a cost for this and a cost for that, he said it was never ending, he had to even prove that he was owner after they found a scratch on the Vin plate, they said it may have been tampered with,

    anyway,
if you do decide to take you bike, check out http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ they are full of inforamtion on that sort of stuff.

    Good luck in Ozzy

I know a few people who have done it - not too hard I hear. Ask Crazy horse, she managed it

It's not worth the hassle mate. I took my Z1RTC over with me...no end of headaches and hassles.

Yeah, I took my SV650 over last year. There are lots of hidden costs involved.

You need to get it vinned over there - cost about $250
Pay GST on it - 10% of purchase price
Re-register it - and insurance is compulsary $800 pa (approx)

My thoughts? Unless you had it for ever (like I did), then I would not do it.

The rules are different over there, and you can ride up to a 400 cc in QLD on a learner licence. SO it would pay to do your homework first. The roads are very different for riding and a 250 may not be all that suitable over there. That is one of the reasons why the cc rating is higher there.

Also, bike prices are comparable to here - dollar for dollar without taking the exchange rate into account. So I really do not think it is worth it in your case. And the other positive thing is, when you land, you can buy a bike. If you transport one over, it would take up to a month from leaving here to getting it road worthy.

    Good luck
