Yeah I've got a bunch of them in the gully next to my place in NP, I think at least two actually live close by. One morning a few weeks ago I counted 7 of them galavanting around the tree tops!

They've been hurt badly by the destruction of habitat. They're nectar feeders and need large territories full of Kowhai trees.

Not sure what the trees are they are feeding on near my place, they're tall with little clusters of red berries. Seen them with their beaks jammed up the flax flowers too.

They love Kowhai, Flax, anything with nectar...aussie calistemon (bottlebrush) is a goodie as well...these guys this morning (I think there is more than one) were in a gum tree - they love Eucalyptus Grossa - flowering gum - as well.

The Tron council has had a program of planting massive kowhai plantations along the river - maybe it is working...mind you I think that planting program has been axed...as fucking usual...

They'd probably say "you need a resource consent sonny..."

But, they must already have obtained such resource consents as are necessary? For their own (now cancelled) program.

    We could do this, y'know.

Get a bunch of bikers together (they're always a puch over for anything public spirited), ride down and each biker plants a baby tree.

Get the press along (council wouldn't dare object then).

And get it sponsered by whoever makes Tui beer. So there can be prizes, and beer and a BBQ and stuff (public spirit we call that)

Oooh ooooh ooooh what a wonderful idea!
I think it might be a bit late for tree-planting season this year though
    But next winter! Yes please!

if this tree planting goes ahead, i wouldnt be able to attend, but would be more than happy to donate a tree or two. i love native birds of all kinds, and the tui is certainly one of the most stylish. down the road from us, all the kerbside lawns have the same kind of tree on them. the tuis are always in those trees. lovely to listen to, but impossible to see! few weeks ago, they were trimming the trees. i hope they didnt ruin any nests as it is coming up to that time.

If someone happened, by chance, to know our new KB-Almost-MP, perhaps he could gain some imprimatur from the Green party?

And I'm sure the makers of Tui beer would be very happy to contribute the trees. Just think of the puiblicity ! And unlike most goody-goody environmental save-the-earth type stuff, this has bikers as well. So it's rough tough mean badass environmental save-the-earth type stuff ! A spin doctor's dream .

The only problem is someone would need to organise it. I don't organise things, because I am permanently disorganised. Spontaneous chaos is my thing.
