This is where the cable is fraying.  I would not have expected this to happen if it had been greased.
			
		 
	 
 Actually, most have a plastic sleeve around the bit on the end. I usually dose 'em with chain wax when I do the chain, can't help myself. Shouldn't need it though, and yours orta have lasted well more than 10k if it's routed right.
