I'd go Hamilton, Te Awamutu, the road past Lake Arapuni, right to Waipapa, Maraetai, then either across and through Atiamuri and back on SH1 or Poihipi Rd down to Taupo.

Ride SH4 from Eight-Mile Junction to Wanganui. Stop and have a coffee at the Out Of The Fog Cafe at Owhango. SH4 is one of the best motorcycle roads in the North Island. End of story.

Why not consider Bay of Plenty, State Highway 2. Whakatane, Opotiki, Waioeka Gorge to Gisborne - then Gisborne-Wairoa-Napier and stay in Napier the first night.

I rode that last week and it was bloody awesome. Quiet smooth roads (no road works the whole way), gorgeous scenery, and on the east coast better chance of stable weather.

The right happens at NGARUAWAHIA.....turn right at Taupiri and you are in the river...

It doesn't really matter the important bit is it's all good as soon as you leave the Big little City

Dontcha love those fast sweepers from Eight Mile to Taumarunui, then the next set south from their to Raurimu? Followed by a nice interlude of long straights to Raetihi before the Joys of the Paraparas? Not to mention the scenery. Or the hospitality at the Out Of The Fog Cafe at Owhango.

    STEVE!

    Go this way...

    Auckland to Taupo

    Taupo to Wellington

If you are short on time for Taupo - Wellington then take the short route round the East side of the lake to Turangi, then across to National Park - this is more or less the way I went North from Wellington, though I went out to Dannevirke then to Marton via Saddle Road, then out to Wanganui. SH4 is a mint road, I was lucky enough to do 96km of it (all the good bits) with no traffic!

    Try this route...

    Link here

It'll be abit longer... okay, quite abit longer... but would be a great ride!!

Misses out alot of the boring straight, cop-ridden bits and replaced it with some quiet, interesting roads... I haven't ridden that whole way, but have driven most of it... Magic...

Fit the Forgotten Highway in somehow, it is on the west coast from stratford to Taumaranui. I swear, that will be some of the best 150kms you will ever ride.
