While driving through Taumarunui recently I noticed the hospital has some rooms with bars on the windows - these should suit you guys quite nicely.

Thanks for the offer but I'm with Mark, not as in literally "with Mark in his room" but in following his lead in opting for a motel in Taumarunui. Somewhere walking distance to the "attractions" and with a decent (= my own for the time I am there) shower.
There is also a very nice cafe at the north end of Taumarunui, just before the road Junction (not open Monday's though).
