every one makes mistakes.. things happen.. so who should pay... the majority very often don't ... the minority very often do....and so on....

levies can be argued till the cows come home... to me some serious investigation is required... with out road user chargers... buses & trucks are heavier... cause more accidents in reality (trucks).. bikes may be less seen.. but are more aware... hello me govt... or pm... truckies pay loads and bikers... and who causes the most accidents. statistics show... its''''''''''''''...........idiots.

What needs changing? "Simple" answer is: New Zealanders attitude to asserting their rights and egos on the road.

As a nation we seem to have a huge number of absent-minded, half blind, self absorbed, halfwits in control of motor vehicles.

Sadly changing a nations mentality to one of courtesy, consideration and (dare I say it) erring on the side of caution when travelling on the road via ANY form of transport is waaaaaaaay beyond being achievable.

theres very little thought for how terrified the rider might be, or that if they hit some oil and fall off in front of the car that they could die, or at least get seriously hurt, cos the car couldnt stop in time. so many people dont think "consequences" anymore.

sorry I was in a moment there, I don't have the facts.... but I have seen some major accidents, and trucks driving faster than 100km terrify me in a cage!!!! let alone a bike.

I drive a lot and have for a long time. I generally find truck drivers very professional, ok they do 100kph instead of 90, but then who wouldn't, mostly they will move over and let you pass wherever possible. If the average car driver was as good as the average truckie I'd be happy. Oh yes, I drive a van.

The road rules have evolved over quite some time and they are reasonably robust.

The problem is the "kiwi".
Poorly trained (if ever) to meet the MINIMUM standard to pass a pathetically weak driving test, then they get let loose on the nation's roads.

When they fuck-up and get caught doing something stupid, there is a piss-weak justice system that slaps them with a wet bus ticket.


I am glad to see the adverts from Autoclub Insurance(?) on tv. They claim to provide driver training and then reduce the insurance because of that. Good on them.

My best accident (witnessed) ever was riding along the Old Hutt road. There is a set of lights with a very difficult left turn and I could see that the dozy sot coming down the hill from Khandallah was going to run the red, so I braked (not breaked - that would have hurt) gently to warn the 300 tonne SUV on my arse that he needed to wake up and he pulls around me, gives me the finger and horn, floors it, and gets centre punched by the dozy old sot.

It was totally wicked.

O how I laughed. Erring on the side of caution can be comedy gold.

I would have paid good money (or even, bad money) to have seen that.

I almost chortled a few weeks ago when communtering home one night. Traffic was moving slowlyish, and a smart arse on a 125 whips up the inside going around 60ish, to be taken out by a van indicating a left turn into a driveway. Not too much damage, as the van barely clipped him (although his shiny newish bike) ended up wedged under the front bumper. Van driver was bewildered by this act of stupidity, I was amused, biker was apologetic and admitted fault. (I suspect he was "showing me how it was done", so it was fitting that he got done).

Best bit was his fluoro yellow vest that didn't save him from being pwnd - "Watch out for bikes!"
If only he'd worn his other one - the fluoro pink one that said "Watch out for dumbarses!"

(It's OK - you don't need to warn me about attracting the ire of the BikerGodz; I'm communtering by car for the forseeable future, as #2Son's blown his car up. Turns out today that he actually likes pillioning. Who'da thought?!? All his gibes and pointed comments about "murdercycles" and "dangerous fkn bikers!" that I took to being disapproval were in fact not. Shame - as last week I gave away all my spare bike gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, boots) so can't pillion him any more. So, it's the car for us. )

mmm that is food for thought, I grew up being taught the english way, and we didn't take note of not learning on the motorway 27 years ago.. or doing a certain speed... I drive with courtesy and ride the same way, thanking people on my bike is priority... giving people the knowledge that I appreciate the courtesy they give me... the wet bus ticket comment is pretty real... might earn ya a bling
