    Question 1928 Ariel

I have just bought myself a 1928 ariel, been wanting a classic bike for years, this came up for sale the same week my Dad passed away, he and the ariel are the same age, so I'm going to be a bit sentimental about it. Has anyone got any info they can pass on about these? I do have friends to help me as it is in ned of restoration, but the best way to learn is at the bottom. Also has anyone got an idea of how much this beauty would be worth?

What model is it Annie? Ariel had a good range back then...

Best place to go for info would be owners clubs. Go to www.google.co.nz and punch in ariel. You will need plenty of spare time for this. Enjoy.

Way to go mate,as said get hold of the owners club.
One of my uncles had a Red hunter during the sixtys,a fine bike.
There,s some thing about the smell of oil on hot cast iron, one of those memories from way back, always gets me dreaming.
Use Castor oil in it,even better,Ahhhhh the old days.
    ENJOY,

That's an early Val Page design. Overhead valves and an automatic, crank-driven oil pump (!). The SS, as the name suggests, was the "tuned" model, and they were popular race bikes.

The 1928 model also featured a new frame (the '27 was not good, apparently). In 1932, with some "sporting" modifications, it became the Red Hunter.

Sorry, I don't know much else about them, but the following link is a good place to start... http://members.aol.com/arielmod/advice/arielmod.htm

This advert was in Motorcyclemarketplace last month. Could be a good local contact.
WANTED Ariel, 1928, OHV frame and other parts, anything considered. Call Chris in Auckland on 09-533-8050, 021-895-975 or Email taylorhq@clear.net.nz #1987, 1.9.2003.
    Hope it helps

Dad had a 500 Red Hunter in 1938. Came complete with spare high comp. piston and other stuff.. Timed at 105mph on Foxton Beach.

Could do Wellington to New Plymouth - up the Ngaraunga gorge and all in 4hrs....in 1938!

Very similar to this one ...

Annie I've sent you an e-mail and copied it to my friend who has a 28 Ariel and hopefully he will get in touch with you.

I raced down this page a bit quick and for some reason assumed the photo posted was yours (however it was SPman's) but then I see you said you will get some digital photos soon.

My friend is in the VCC in Wellington as they run a bikes group.
    Cheers

    Merv
