    Three things I learned today...

    1. The Australasian Harrier (aka "hawk") is one big mother of a bird - when you get up close and personal...round the corner, winding it on and there s/he is - on the road kill. Lifts off just as I'm thinking "Sheeeeit!" (they take their time about that lift off). I duck my head underneath birdie and get to see all the details from about six inches away. Nice bird. Big too...

    2. When the highway repairmen stick out a sign that says "New Seal - 50km", it's not always a good idea to think "Huh! 80'll be fine...". Coz sometimes they hide the new seal in a corner, in the shade, against the low sun, on a sharpish right hander, and leave it practically knee deep in lovely little blue metal ball-bearings...now that was an arse twanger...specially coming not long after the birdie above...Like ice skating on two wheels.

    3. On a more serious note. The guys who attend serious crashes on the road, like the one I came across this morning just south of Karapiro on SH1, do a difficult job and deserve much credit for it. The looks on the faces as I idled through the scene spoke volumes. The car looked like it had drifted off the road to the left, into the little ditch depression beside the road, hit a culvert for a driveway and then totally lost it. What was left of the car was a total mess. Just a heap of bent metal facing back the way it had come. I could only hope the occupant/s were OK, but as I said, there were some very serious faces huddled around a stretcher on the side of the road.

Take care everyone - be safe.

You were lucky that the bird also had his arse clenched tightly.

Oh yes. Quite a bit of weight can be jettisoned to assist liftoff. And their bomb sights are very accurate...
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Totally agree with all the comments, had a few close ones this weekend myself; 1. some kind of mangled ex-bird in the front wheel?! 2. The 6km (ish) stretch of unsealed road up nr Cape Reinga is bl**dy lethal in the wet on a sport bike, should be all good in a month or so though then it'll be sealed all the way!! Didn't see any road accidents though in 900kms
