    Serious Advice Needed

    Hi guys,

I qualify for a restricted under the CBTA thingey, and I'm confident I'll pass it and gain my restricted.

Is there anyway I'll be able to ride a 400 on my restricted??

    Exemptions/legal loopholes, etc.

I would also want to fully insure and ride the bike legally.

I've found this perfect bike, from a genuine owner........ but since I've recently turned 23 and I got my learners at the end of this Jan, it looks like I can only get my full at the end of the year.

Any genuine advice would be seriously appreciated.

and hold the you are too inexperienced rants...... i have no problems with self-control.

Well Im not too sure on the 400, it is a breach of license but why not get it and hold onto it until your full?

You mean have the bike sitting in my garage for another 9 months.....

Don't think I can afford to do that.

If I buy that bike I'll sell my ZZR and ride only that...... otherwise it would be too tempting/inconvenient.

nope. Law states you can't ride anything bigger than a 250cc motorbike until you have gained your full lisence. Unless you can come up with a bloody good excuse (personally don't know any), then you're outta luck I'm afraid. With your restricted, the only change from 'Learners' is you can now do upto 100kph and not having to display your L plate. Everything else (no pillion, no riding between the hours (can't remember what they are), and no bike above 250cc (is there one more?)) still applies.

Could always buy it and just save it until you pass your full, or go 'under ground' and just ride it and pray you don't get stopped, but I wouldn't recommend that really.

If you're looking for something a bit more daring than the ZZR, then why don't you look at a sports 250, like a CBR or RGV250 etc..

I don't mind the riding underground part. It's the not being able to insure it part that has me worried.

And I can get a beautiful 400 for the price of an OK 250...... so.......and after my limited experience with a 400, I don;t think I want another 250...... I want a bigger learning curve.

If it was a question of a few months I'd buy it NOW!!

But I have to wait 3 weeks to sit the restricted. And then HOLD THE RESTRICTED for ANOTHER 9 MONTHS. Then sit the rest of the CBTA thingey to get the full.

So that makes it a total of 9 months of having the bike sitting there...

The only reason I'm so worked up is that this bike is perfect...

if you get pulled, insurance isn't your worry. If you crash it, repairs to most 400s are *fairly* cheap. What you hit, well who knows, and why. If you're prepared to go against your restrictions of lisence, then to hell with any other cost really.. You said it yourself, you won't get insured, simple as that.

and 400s will always be around too, it's not the only one around, so when you have your full, then go find another 400, there'll be plenty around. Sports 250s will feel more powerful than your ZZR too, so it might be a solution for you until you get your full.

And if you are caught the whole CBTA thingy is out the window and you have even longer to wait before you get your full. Is it really worth it. 9 months isn't that long in the scheme of things. Patience grasshopper and all that crap. Insurance won't pay out either if you are riding outside of your licence restrictions. The choice is yours whether you think it's worth the risk.

I have seen from other posts on the site where people have got exemptions based on that they are uncomortable on a 250cc due to there size/height, so JSG you need to bulk up and then apply, apart from that not aware of any other cause for an exemption.

I had a similar problem a few months ago when i wanted to buy a mint VFR800 with 8 months to my full. Unfortunately, unless you can come up with a medical excuse or another very good excuse you will be stuck with a 250. The one good thing is if you really want the bike, insurance will sometimes cover it if you are not riding it. I was quoted about $500 per year to store the 800 in a locked garage until my full (fire theft etc).

could be an option for you.

There IS one way I know.
only if your a heavy fulla.

what you do is goto colemans and find the shittiest smallest bike maybe a 125 or something. get a photo of you one the bike showing that because of your size it would be impractical for you to do so. (this might also work if your particulaly tall or somat) make sure your leg covers the 125cc part and make it out to be a 250 (dont lie, just bend truth a wee bit)

then show a picture of you on a 400 showing that its much safer for you and other motorists

send it off to LTSA and get an exemption

    or something like that
I only posted this because of the global economic crisis

Unless you're a rich guy I'd say the risks are too high and sit out the time. There'll be another 400 (maybe a 600 - wish I'd gone straight to a 600 instead of getting the 400 I did...)
