I learned something today. Something I've been told for years, read about, watched......

You can get in anywhere if you just look like you belong.

    Boy did I have fun.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?

So, you were taken as being a real live journalist?
Or are you talking about people mistaking you for a pollie?

Someone thought I was a journo.

I was sure I saw Hitcher in Police uniform, so that wasn't me.

    Ah. My first guess then.
They were wrong, obviously - your writing is WAY too good for the average level of journalistic waffle. If you ever start actually thinking you are a journalist (rather than a talented part-timer/amateur but genius literary raconteur) slap yourself about the head.

Oh - and keep up the excellent work, Sir!

In all seriousness, considering the NZ newspapers I have seen, there are no real journalists in NZ.

By a real journalist I mean someone who exercises critical thought, does research, digs deeper into the dirt and have the balls to bring the story forward. Not just someone who reports on what the authorities have said and what the latest sports results are. ...oh, and keeps us informed on the exciting ongoings in the lives of the celebrities.
It is preferential to refrain from the utilisation of grandiose verbiage in the circumstance that your intellectualisation can be expressed using comparatively simplistic lexicological entities. (...such as the word fuck.)

Trust me, the photos of Les are not what you want to see in the celebrity columns. My camera went all blurry after photographing and filming Les and Nick Smith.

Well, I knew that, so I was using the term 'journalist' in the Kiwi sense - those who call themselves a journalist, but who do not exercise critical thought, does only superficial research (usually on teh Interdweeb), digs a shallow grave into the dirt and doesn't have the balls to bring the story forward. Y'know - just someone who reports on what the authorities have said and what the latest sports results are. ...oh, and keeps us informed on the exciting ongoings in the lives of the celebrities.

As you said, there are no real journalists in NZ. Anyone who practices real journalism would soon wither sink to the level of the other kind, or leave the country, or take up another career out of frustration.

Les might be celebrated, but he's got substance - i.e. not a celebrity.

Nick Smith might not have substance, but he's hardly being celebrated.

And for the record, I was - despite the sarcastic poke at the pop-culture coverage that seems to be taking up half of the world news sections - dead serious. NZ journalistic standards are appalling. Take the bit from this source:

That statement is being presented as fact. I'd say it's highly debatable, if not outright incorrect.

According to NZTA MVR statistics book 2008 there was 55,180 motorcycles and 19,960 mopeds - excluding vehicles on excemption licenses. If motorcycles paid a $250 and mopeds a $70 ACC levy through registration - this would add up to $15,192,200 and that's without taking the fuel levy into account. As such there's gotta be an error somewhere, but the "news"papers most likely couldn't be bothered actually looking into something like that I suppose.
Other people on here have presented figures from ACC to suggest that the claimed $62 million in paid claims seems a bit too high...

An interesting fact from the NZTA MVR statistics book 2008 is the following:

Total licensed motorcycles, excluding excemption licenses: 55,180
    Total number of motorcycles: 106454
Total licensed cars, excluding excemption licenses: 2,287,697
    Total number of cars: 2,789,676

As such only 51.8% of all motorcycles are licensed compared to 82.0% for cars. As such there is a considerable discrepancy between car and motorcycle registration in regards to carrying the burden for the entirety of either type of vehicle.
