Both sides are approx $2800 NZD, so if you want them it would be a bargain. I weighed up the options of replacing, getting new, bigger cells, and the cheaper was to get the 40 litre tanks in the end...In the REAL end, it never happened, but I was worried about the cost if they dropped and were pierced.....![]()
We will see what happens. But i have a wee suspicion that the dealer and importer will come to the party. Only time will tell! Wish me luck. Its all a real pain in the arse. Its a faulty tank. No other possible cause, with where it is. Then tank is as good as new. Yeak I know they cost a fortune. Lets see what plays out. Will keep you posted !
what about the warranty the bike not 2 years old or is it ?
Fuel useage on trip - you may find this really interesting (or not!!)
Ok we have been to Auckland and back - mostly by bike - we have ridden through some farking horrendous wind in both Islands but fortunately had a pretty good last couple of days.
Prior to the trip I had changed the front cog to a 16T to lower the gearing - I am really pleased with that. The bike is much nicer to ride in all conditions and is no longer labouring at anything under 120. It is about 500 revs higher at any speed in top gear than with the standard cog.
OK the fuel. Firstly we were two up (combined weight of about 140-150kg - and no I'm not going to split that into two!!) plus a very large topbox and my two biggest panniers, all full - so significant weight and drag.
The following fuel consumption figures are now divided into two sections - that prior to and that after the fuel pump crapped out just north of Himatangi (in a farking gale), and after the dealer in Palm North ( Brendan at AFC motorcycles who I cannot speak highly enough of for his assistance) took a pump out of a wrecked RC8 and put it in for our return home. (While they fixed it the next morning, we got a rental car and took that the rest of the way to Auckland and then back to Palmy - with the gales it was a lot more pleasant!!)
On the way up the fuel consumption ranged between 15 and 15.75 km/litre. Based on past useage and in the riding conditions and the speed we were travelling at I thought that that was about right. However on the home run with the new fuel pump our consumption improved considerably to between 17- 18.2 km/litre !!!!! WTF ????
Ever since I had the bike there has been a couple of things I thought weren't quite right and I think indicate that the fuel pump wasn't working properly for quite some time - it used to get really sooty around the end of the exhaust with some quite large spots. I had cut out on me one time soon after I got it but started up immediately - at the time I put this down to possibly a spare key catching on a cable and moving the ignition key slightly, and one other time it spluttered a bit when the fuel level was getting down a bit.
I cleaned the tailpipe at Kaikoura on the way home and there isn't a trace of sooty shit anywhere from there home (800+km)
A new fuel pump is on order and it seems highly likely that KTM will cover it under a goodwill warranty - both McIver and Veitch and AFC have sold a heap of these bikes and neither have experienced this problem before - lucky me...... The RC8 pump apparently has a different part number but the AFC guys reckon that the only difference they could see was in the length of the hoses. Hopefully the improved fuel economy will remain after the new pump goes in and the RC8 one goes back to AFC !!!
While it is a pain in the neck when this sort of breakdown happens at least we weren't in the middle of the desert road - the support from both KTM dealers has been excellent and hopefully KTM will come to the party with the pump as well. Didn't really need the extra $500 for the rental car but........ Incidentally the manual Corolla did 15.2km/l for the trip to Auckland and back

Interesting experience. When you say that both AFC and M&V both mentioned that they have never had a fuel pump fail before was the something unique about the failure? I ask this cause there is heaps of reports of fuel pumps failing on Advrider. Lots are putting in Facet solid state pumps. More info over on the KTM950 Hall of wisdom.
Further thoughts for discussion - does the RC8 pump run at a higher pressure and allow more precise fuel metering (via the injectors) such that you are getting a cleaner/less rich burn? Surely the FI puter would deal with this change in pressure by altering the injector timings and the pressure difference is not likely to be that high?
All very interesting and strange!

I'm no gynaecologist, however I would be happy to take a look......................
OH YEAH i DO LIKE MY CARBS AND THE FACET FUEL PUMP.....OUTSIDE THE FUEL TANK...........
The computer didn't come up with any fault codes - apparently there is some new (and bloody expensive) computer diagnostic tool coming available but there might not be too many of them sold to NZ dealers
Don't think there's anything particularly unique about the part failure. They have had probs with some 690's but not 990's
Has anyone else consistently got 17.5 km/litre or better on a trip cruising in the 115-125 range?? - if not then I'm not sure I want to give the RC8 one back again !!!!
I have wondered about the old one producing sub optimal pressure and whether that caused larger droplets and the poor burn and carbon spots etc.

Fuel pumps on the 950's are a common part to fail, mine just failed after doing a 4500km trip to Moto GP & Tasmania. Pump was available in Australia but super expensive so purchased one through KTM parts in the states along with a few other bits I thought would be nice to have & was still cheaper & got delivered quicker.
Most 950 owners replace with the facet pump but as mine is the 950SM & the pump is attached to the tank there was not enough room to fit.
I also have my gearing lowered with the 16T front sprocket & regularly get approx 16.5km/ltr, purchased a 17T but most likely will not fit it as the SM is great with the lower gearing - wheelies in first 3 gears, great fun coming out of tight corners.
If you're not living on the edge you're not leaning over far enough
have you guys seen the new colors for the 990..
one of the welly rides owns this bike..
this is how it came about...
my turn will be soon to take the 9fiddy through here....

Regarding my tank issue. Been talking with the dealer and things are sounding a tad more positive. I am sending them heaps of detailed photo's (way better than taking it all the way to Dunedin to the dealer for photo's). Fingers crossed a goodwill warranty will be the way. Its obvious the tank is in great condition and only damage is the crack that appeared out of nothing. Lets hope KTM NZ stand behind the product! Will keep you posted.

cool pic Joe, good to see one of the big boys doing some real work
