So I did some further playing tonight and what I summarised above appears to be true, winding the preload in moves a hydraulic arrangement on top of the shock which loads force onto the spring.

Here's some pics, check out the top of the shock body and you can clearly see the difference.

The first pic is preload right out, the 2nd preload right in. At face value then it would appear to be working.

OK it seems I'm certifiable. No collar near the top of the shock near the preload adjuster. Also I can't see collar near the bottom of the shock. The spring compression tool that KTMTwins sell might explain everything. Pic below shows that there is a spring compressor which may be used to enable a slip on collar near the base of the shock to be removed allowing removal of the spring i.e. only preload adjustment available is in the hydraulic preload adjustor. Funny thing is this pic shows the spring being compressed against the bottom of the shock so is there a slip on collar near the top of the shock. Damn it does anybody have a manual for the KTM 950 shock. I have a manual for the 5018 PDS shock but I think this is a the shock the EXC's use.

So this just leaves checking that the shock has been put together properly or finding out what spring JMJ has. KTM twins indicate on this page that the stock spring on the non S models is (05 to 07) is 150n where as the S model (05 to 07) is 140n and they offer a 130n spring.

    Cheers R

Mine has a 140n spring fitted. My bike is also an '04 which that spring apparently doesn't fit. The earlier bikes have longer shocks/springs than the later ones.

The other thing is, jumping up and down on the bike in the garage I couldn't notice any difference between preload fully in and fully out.

Anyone dealt with KTMworld.com? any recommendations or otherwise?

I'm looking to get a couple of bits which KTMtwins don't appear to sell though I'll fiick them an email soon to doublecheck. If anyone else wants any bits maybe we could combine.

Shock is inverted while using tool...

Here's my 640 shock (non-PDS) inverted with poor-man's spring compressors:

(top has normal threaded preload collars, obs.)
