Got a quick query about Chain and sprockets for you regarding my 990 Adventure. About how much km's have your chain and sprocket lasted.Almost done 35000km and having to adjust the chain more regularly now. Been away on a big mission with the Mrs. Bike loaded to the hilt. the chain was beginning to loosen again pretty quickly. I assume this means the chain is at the end of its life. Or could I just take out a link? If I did this would it last much longer? Any feedback much appreciated.

Once they are at the end of their life they stretch every ride, at the end I went for a ride after adjusting my chain only in the middle of nowhere to have it slapping away and had to adjust it before I carried on, removing a link wouldnt buy you much time as its still stretching and just increasing the risk of breaking teeth off the sprockets, just pony up the hundreds of dollars and get a new x-ring and sprockets and not have to worry about it again,

Around 30000km seems about right. I know of a 950 & a 990 that had to replace chain & sprockets at aprox the same km.

^ +1. Having to adjust the chain often is a sign of a chain nearing the end of its life.

i ran out of adjustment in kaikoura. we had to meet the ferry that day, just keep riding it hoping like hell it didn't brake.
when i got back to masterton that night,
all the tips of the teeth on the rear sprocket where broken off, chain had warn a grove in the chain guard also..

so forked out the $500 odd bucks for new chain and sprocket set,, i was lucky to get away with it..

ask paladin he was there with me..

other than the seat latch bolts, how else have you fasten this to the guard.

There is two 4.9 mm pop rivets at the front edge to be drilled into the frame the are not shown in this photo, but check out the attached installation sheet it tells you how to install the tray

My first thought - being someone who uses all the suspension travel on the 640A - is that the tray looks like it encroaches on the rear wheel travel. Look at the way the forward guard and the cross-brace are both relieved, presumably to allow clearance to the tyre.

So far clearance has not been a problem on the 950 and 990's even two up on challenging tracks, haven't had the wheel hit the tray.
the guys in the US who come up with the idea and have fitted them don't seem to report any issues.
But a way to check would be to put a bit string under the seat across the bottom edge of the sub frame members and go for a balls out ride and see if your tyre has ripped the string off as that would mean your tyre would have touched the bottom of the tray.

Another other option which I might look at when I pull my shock in the next few weeks is to jack up the swingarm without the shock fitted and see if it will even move that far up.

Do it with a fresh knobby on.. they can be significantly taller than part-worn adventure tyres.

If you have ABS on your 990 its look a good way to get some more storage but on the 950 I wouldn't think you would need anymore as I can get a shed load of stuff in the underseat area.
