Check all your connections - make sure there're no corroded earth connections.

Exactly the same with my 08. Finally bought new battery and now have the perfectly good original sitting on bench which gets a charge from time to time to try and keep it active. Also made up a set of jumper leads which sits in tanktop space permanently as couldnt think what else to do.
    cheers

Good point. I have jumped it with no apparent probs. Leads are light enough to coil up in glovebox and are enough to start it. Wouldnt want to use them longer than a few seconds tho. Wiring size matches that on bike.

    extra lighting / spottys

would you add a separate wire loom for the lights and run of a switch.

or connect to the high beam set up.

    cigi lighter connectors,
do you run these of a relay

Dont forget Acc1 and Acc2 wires for accessories in behind the headlight assembly. One is hot regardless of key position the other is on with ignition. Good for connecting relays to etc.

And they use the fuses in the fuse box so no need to worry about putting new fuses on the bike.

    950 heights and centre stands

My 950 appears to have an 'S' centre stand fitted.

I have read that the earlier 950's were slightly higher than the later ones, but by how much and whether that meant they had a different stand I've no idea. Anyway, comparing my bike to Joe's the bikes are the same height, but my centre stand is definately 30mm higher. This means it's difficult, if not nigh on impossible to get the bike onto the stand

Before I start chopping the stand up to shorten it, does anyone want to swap their standard height stand for my 'S' length one?

IIRC these are a fairly light gauge wire so the use of relays for lighting and heavy draw loads is recommended, have a careful look before you plug too much into these connections.

I pulled out the manual looking for ideas for how to do it - with it being fuel injected and the fuel pump being in the tank I thought it could be tricky. I will go and have another look and see what the instructions say about removing the tank because there wasn't anything about draining the tank. If the tank is reasonably quick to remove it would be the best way - although the siphoning actually works well if you can stop sucking before the fuel arrives!! (I can just see someone quoting that and adding - "knew a girl like that once...")

Got a minor issue with my 990. To do with the battery.SOmething seems to be draining it ever so little by little.

So, jump forward 3 weeks(bike had been fine since) Took the bike to work. A short 5 km ride.( The day before took it for a blast thru the nevis with the mrs's on the back. thats 200km round trip) A cold day(where the fuck is summer) Bike sat for about 12 hours during the day and you guessed it battery was weak and just turned her over but would turn over twice then cough. Nothing! Waited about one minute and luckily she fired up, just.
Any ideas fella's before I talk to the workshop boys. Does it sound familiar? Just to re iterate, gps mount and heated grips are wired to ignition.
really appreciate any feedback as want to get it sorted so to avoid any potential major cock up in the middle of bumfuck Idaho( opp's I meant Otago!)
    Cheers Dion!
This sounds very familiar - but my incidents were on the Tiger. Get a volt meter and measure the voltage at the battery and see what happens when you rev it up and hold a few revs (mine would actually drop the voltage as the revs were held) - the voltage across the battery should be 13+ volts when revved
On the Tiger the problem turned out to be a slightly dirty connection in a joiner in the cable coming from the reg/rec back to the battery. Cheap and easy to fix when you find the fault - clean, spray and put back together. Useful to have a multi/voltmeter to see when you have found the problem.

Me, if the stands are compatible. I have a vague recollection that the 640A stand is the same height as the 950S. I've shortened mine to suit the lowering links, so now with the std links back on, the modded stand is too short.

Edit: No go, the stands are completely different designs.
    Cheers,
    Colin

OK point taken. I'm thinking of the 950 with the fuel pump down near the battery. Still I'm sure there will be petcocks on the lower front inside of the fuel tanks (bottom of the radiator level) with a hose that connects the tanks. Surely fuel will flow out of both of these without the pump on?
