First how much can you afford?, also allow some $$$ for reasonable gear, ie helmet, gloves, Jacket, Pants, Boots.
I would recomend a 250 over a 125 as the 125 may get a bit small fast. What type of riding do you want to do?, this will determin what type of bike you get, Go sit on as many as you can in the dealers, it will give you a feel for the bikes.
There are some good deals on Trade Me, but you do need to know what you are looking at, and what questions to ask, You might pay a bit more through a dealer but you have a consumers garantee act to fall back on if things go pear shaped, though most dealers will be quiet good at helping you.
    And Welcome to KB.

Cool. Check out my trademe ad below and make me an offer if you like the Cruiser style of bike. Mine's got a year's dealer warranty left on it, so no worries about anything going wrong. Lots of reviews/information on the internet if you want to know more.

I'd like to sell this fast (and pay off my credit cards ), so you'll get a good deal.

BHS, try Qkchk, I did my BHS with Dawn, very relaxed and easy as.

As for the bike, personally I would forget a 125 but that's me. It all depends on you, what type of riding you will be doing, what your mechanical knowledge is etc. Try lots then narrow down your choices from there.

Vtr250 is a good choice, but a lot depends on your confidence...

A confident person would be fine on a 250...a some what nervous learner, like some one close to me, had a VTR 250 but was somewhat daunted by it and should have began on something smaller.

Depends what type of rider you are. If you are supremely confident, and are prepared to practice U turns, tight unpowered turns, and all the really tricky stuff on a massive fully-faired bike, then go for the hyo or the ninja.

If you are going to be scared of it, and just ride it in a straight line coz you might drop it, you wont be getting much learner-type practice on it, but they are good training on the open road.

Really, fully faired bikes aren't good inital learner bikes, as you're not going to flick it around like you should.

"What Steve said pretty much summed it up."
"I did axactly as you said and it worked...!!"
    "Wow, Great advise there DB."
