Survey finds ‘Bikers fall into six tribes’

According to a survey undertaken by Australian insurer InsureMyRide, bikers fall into six distinct ‘tribes’.

The survey put most riders in the ‘Specialist’ tribe; more experienced, spend more time on their bikes and less nervous when riding. This tribe tends to be less competitive and are safety conscious.

‘Performance Riders’ are younger but confident, leading them to take more risks on the road.

‘Sport Tribe’ features purists, who prefer their thrills on come via the controlled environment of a circuit. This tribe also values protective clothing.

The ‘Lifestyle Tribe’ favours bikes over driving. This tribe tends towards a conservative attitude to riding, sticking by and large to road rules.

Value is a key factor for the ‘Commuter Tribe’, who value the practicality and the chance to save money by riding cheaper motorbikes and scooters. Road rules are rarely broken by this tribe.

Finally, there is the ‘Drifter Tribe’, who ride infrequently and may not even own their own bike – this group contains many riders with significant years of riding under their belts, but are non-committal about riding, suggesting they never had a real passion for biking.

"We've long suspected that different types of riders share a range of attitudes and behaviours" said InsureMyRide executive manager Graeme Brown, adding that the company hoped to use the research to draw attention to aspects of riding behaviour and make conditions safer for road users.

There are three types of bikers in this world: Those who thing there are three types of bikers, and those who don't.

Pity they couldn't include all the wannabe Hardley T shirt wearers as part of the pool for ACC levies. Got told by one the other day that use to ride an 883 softail. Knew everything bout bikes. Had new AMP'S T shirt on too.

Can you be in different tribes on different days? I think I might be a lifestyle/commuter. With a bit more experience I hope to be a livestyle/commuter/specialist.

Also, what about the Tribe Tribe? They are the ones who ride a motorbike to achieve some kind of sense of belonging in a 'community'. They are obsessed with group rides, posting on KB and waving.

There are three tribes of bikers: Them, Us, and ThoseOtherBastards.

Actually that "Six Tribes" thing is crap. I don't fit into any of those groups.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

I think there is another tribe; the 'Ewans'.

A 'Ewan' rides a BMW1200GS, wears exactly the same clothing, helmet etc that McGregor and Boorman did on Long Way Round, and has the bike decked out in Sanp-On luggage etc.

And despute riding a bike that is built to take all kinds of punishment, ride round the world and all that... they try to ride round bumps that wouldn't trouble the suspension on a cruiser!

I also like Klingon's 'Tribe Tribe' idea. I have heard a story about a couple that go to the Ace Cafe in London. They turn up in matching leathers, drop in for a coffee and a bite to eat... then walk round the corner, get in their car and drive home!

So, there's now eight (8!) tribes I don't belong to.
I guess I'll just have to carry on being part of the Loner non-tribe.

Oooh I want to be a Ewan! But I will be cleverer than the other Ewans - I will cover my bike with mud, tangle a bit of long grass in the footpegs, drop it a couple of times to make some convincing dents and maybe imbed some hyena fur onto the headlight rim.

Then I will use it to ride to work (but only when the sun is shining).

just don't do it on a 1200GS - they're very fragile and need a couple of following lancruisers to replace parts and weld up the frame

There are 10 kinds of people in this world... those who knows binary and those who don't.
It is preferential to refrain from the utilisation of grandiose verbiage in the circumstance that your intellectualisation can be expressed using comparatively simplistic lexicological entities. (...such as the word fuck.)

Does this mean that we are all Tribesmen?

How will that consort with the cardy of Fair Isle goodiness?
