    Cagiva Canyon or?

A good friend of mine is thinking about buying one of these or similar. If he can find out the specs, reliability etc. Especially motors on different years? etc.
He has had 2x BMW Dakars... wants to go to a lighter / easier bike for adventure?/metal road riding but with a good road capability.(no porika track stuff.)
All info appreciated as if he doesnt buy a bike he will go the campervan way...

Parts seem to be a bit hit or miss for Cagiva.

Ive waited over 20 weeks for a set of handle bars. Got a clutch cable overnight though.

Yes you did kind of say that (i thought it was on purpose), but it also looks to me that the Cagivas and the Dakar are basically the same anyway, not different enough to bother trading one for the other. Noted that we haven't been told what size engine the Cagiva Canyon is of interest has, there are several options that I can see.

I considered getting a Canyon when I got back into bikes about 3 years ago. Must admit that the main attraction was price. But it looked good and seemed to tick most boxes.

But after a bit of research, I decided against it. The main issue was the engine. There's quite a bit of misinformation about the engine, with some saying it is based on the DR650, others on the Rotax. That would be good news if true, but it is a Cagiva motor that has its origins in the 1980s. There seem to be quite a few issues with the motor (including starter clutch). Most bikes have some issues, but this seemed to have more than normal and riders even in the UK struggled with parts. The motor is down on power (33hp) and you'd need to shift the oil cooler which is placed low in front of the engine like some road bikes. I read a comprehensive review which compared the Canyon with an F650 (Funduro) and KLE500. The F650 came well ahead, then the Canyon, with the KLE coming last. I bought a Funduro at the time and didn't regret it - a much better bike for a road-oriented dual purpose.

But it is a good looker and Kiwi Rider's Stretch loved it.

    Cheers

PS There was an earlier thread on the Canyon: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...ad.php?t=53748

    Caviga Navigator

The Navigators look pretty cool - 1000cc Suzuki TL1000 Vtwin. Should be okay for engine parts at least. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=250818471
    Anybody used one?

    Ok, you got me!

I did think that Cag had a Rotax motor thou.....

Cost of bike don't decide if/when/where one can drop it. This is a piss poor reason to seek out a bike in my opinion...go but a chinese pit bike if value is an issue.
If however, Richard wants to use the bike for things other than dropping, like riding/touring/bit of gravel, then his Bm Dakar would have fitted his needs well.

Could have sold him a good value/well experienced Dr if he wants to keep the pingers down and it was WELL suited to dropping, having done so too many times to count!

Dunno what year Dakars he had, but I think they were about 177kg dry? The Freewind is about 160kg dry (IIRC), road biased, tours well two up, good basics from the DR650 but with twin carbs and bigger valves for more oomph.

Cheap as chips one here. If your mate is somewhere near it, it might be worth a look.

19" front, but some enterprising folks have fitted a 21" front off the DR for more interesting excursions.

The XT also sprang to mind but may not meet the criteria.

Hes the one that "doesnt want" a Dakar anymore not me... I do think he was a bit disappointed when his new one was no different tho his 70000km one!!!
