I do think he was a bit disappointed when his new one was no different tho his 70000km one!!!

At the end of the day there are only so many options for duel riding and I for 1 will argue the suitability of any 1 bike( bar ktm950 according to Oscar) for the whole plethora of sinarios to be found duel riding.
Is it road ability/gravel or single track that is the focus of Richards attention? I personally think the old DR comes close to all 3, some say the KLR is too( but hugely heavy in comp with DR), ktm 640a no doubt. From here the only place to go is bigger( read-reduce single track suitability) or smaller( reduce road suitability). We have all mulled over these options many times i bet in our selection process, 1 thing stands above the rest is that cheap is usually exactly that....cheap.
A $13k Bm Dakar would have been up there with the dr/klr, dare I suggest? 640a?

The Freewinds seem to be good on the roads but not really an adventure bike? More of a road bike suitable for a bit of maybe occasional gravel, slowly...
Handle well on tar, but not good for anything more...I dunno, prove me wrong...There is a cheapie on Trade Me, $4000..so could be a good bargain. Weird speedometer though....

Struan and Roger get about alright on more interesting territory I believe, including the Dusty Butt for the former (on stock 19" wheel) IIRC. I'd probably just fall off but that's the rider, not the bike.

Not what I'd buy with an unlimited budget (although if I had a big garage I'd keep it), but they can be good value if funds are limited and it does what is required. It is lighter than a Dakar, but just one option among many

If the guy is happy with a 19" front and is only riding seal & gravel (not knarly stuff) then I agree - either a Canyon, XF650 or F650 could do the job. Ideally he should ride each to find out which suites him best, rider ability being an important consideration.
However I'm not the best Freewind rider to quote - I ride slow yet still fell off on the Porika & now converting the front to 21" !!

Appreciate all the comments / info. It is what I wanted from forum. Stuff for him to sift through and keep riding... Next step is the test rides etc.. great stuff.

But you also have brand awareness... Some people would not be seen riding a DR or Klr...

Personally I don't think you can go past the Canyon value for road oriented stuff, the value of the Dr650 for more dirt oriented or a KTM LC4e if you've got the money.
