Paekak is too narrow...even the wide bits....no passing lanes,if you get caugght behind a unwilling car its hard to get past. Rimutakas is very very fast in a couple of places...If there is no traffic.
I like em both, bike and car...
I'd have to say SH58 and Greys Rd around the inlet, solely because thats the only one ive ridden! lol, have to take the SH58 side of it everyday if i want to go anywhere, and Greys Rd was the 1st spot i came off my bike, albeit right at the end at the crazy corskrew-type corner! Was only going about 35 too![]()
To me, it's like comparing an apple with an orange. If you want what I've seen described as one of the best roads of it's type in overseas bike mags, then head over the takas. If you want somthing a little edgier, but shorter, do the Paekak Hill. Both is also a great option lol
The best time to do the hill is at about 3 to 4:30 am on a full moonlit weeknight, take it from me, it will be worth your effort...Light enough to read the small print stickers on your bike, yet you can still see headlights a mile off, in the unlikely event that you will see any cars that is.
Watch for those pre mentioned driveways on paekak though eh.
My best memory from my many rides through there was on a RG250 on a wet road, it was deliciously insane![]()
That road is like premature ejaculation, it's all over way to fast to reach peak enjoyment!
Ahhhh, Yes, My all time favourite, I've done it over 200 times
The Akas, run between Upper Hut and Waikanae. Think the tightness of the windiest part of Ohariu valley for about 16 km,s. then it opens up to Makara like proportions for another 16 odd km's.
I used to live at the bottom of Makara and remember trimming many bushes along that road in my time hehehe
I unloaded a superbike out the van for that sexy number, ohhhhhh yeahhhhh
Like the following loop.....
Takas, Aka's, Piekak, Moonshine. Great up size combo right there!![]()
Well after all the talk and such good weather I decided to go for a quick blast after work from Jville to makara. Great road - only had to overtake four cars on way out and about the same on the way back - not bad for rush hour.
Couple of bits of gravel on the road in the usual places. Once again a great bit of road for a quick blast. It's just the kind of road that the street triple is made for. Quick acceleration out of and and hard braking into most of the bends - not a flowing road at all.
In Wellington area proper, Akatarawa road, just over the hill and slightly south of Martinborough is Haurangi road which is very cool.
Take Dry River Road/Blue Rock Road from just south of Martinborough and at the T junction at the end of that turn right.

just make like you're headed for the takas, take the second left past rimutex (church on the corner I think) and follow that road till you hit kapiti
EDIT: search youtube if you want to know what the road's like, targa ralley used to use it, dont know if they still do
during summer its my favorite way home when the wncr heads out to gordys, awsome road in the dark when you can see cars coming from miles away
i vote rimitakas,
1. i live at the base of it,
2. the other road and me dont have good memorys car thinking he can drift vs me on a 250. guess who ended up in the ditch

Cant say I am fond of Paekak hill, its horrid IMO
Taks's is awesome, but you forgot to add Wainui Coast Road and Makara Beach Road to the poll bro
Just ride.
Rimutakas (only on a windless day) imo. As its more open and safer vision wise, also less arseholes on the wrong side of the road -intentionally or otherwise. Paekak has its charms though.
Also rated... Lindus pass, (well any of the alps passes actually) Mt. Michael up the hill from fairlie, see also: the entire West Coast SI. And that neverending twistie before you come into Kaitia. whats that called? It was the business.
It is only when we have lost everything that we are free to do anything.
Out of those two it would have to be the Takas.
The Wainuiomata Coast Road is an often forgotten and much underrated blat.
Rimutakas would be the best out two poor choices
Gets my vote for shittiest, bumpiest, narrowest little goat track I haveever had the misfortune to ride, before I rode that Paekakriki had that honur
Amen
Don't waste your time
