I think the point here is that the Pleece DO have a clearly defined policy covering all "inappropriate" material. There are 330 odd cases, 61 in Canterbury, out of ~9000 sworn staff.Originally Posted by Gremlin
basically I see it as a media beat up. Ppl are having a chance to teeth suck and finger point, but I bet this particular workplace is a hell of a lot better than most other workplaces with 9000 employees.
as for the dumbasses getting caught, its their own fault, and they should take their lumps: just like the lawyer in the paper (Christchurch Press) today.
(for those who havent read it, not porn, the lawyer smacked someone in the face and shattered his eyesocket.....convicted of assault and had his name all over the paper)

If they are actually accessing websites then, yeah, fair enough. If its photos etc received by email then thats different, alot of people probably hit the delete key, but do they also empty the recycled bin or trash bin often? Most probably don't and think they have deleted it, while its still on their computer.Originally Posted by k14
I agree but re-read the info on this. They took a snapshot of the email system. This doesn't mean the porn was stored on the PC's. It just means people recieved dodgy email's. I get those all the time from my brother which is why he doesn't have my work email account.Originally Posted by Hitcher
I agree that business computers are for just that, business. But taking a snapshot of the email server is quite different from nabbing someone by what internet sites they accessed.
PS: I noticed you post during the day. Are you on leave or using your work computer for non work related activities ??

FANTASTIC WORK WINJA, I AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAID. I HAD ALOT OF RESPECT FOR THE NZ POLICE UNTIL I WAS A VICTIM OF CRIME AND DISCOVERED THAT SEATBELT CHECKPOINTS AND LOOKING AT SNUFF FILMS ALONG WITH MEXICANS RAPING DONKEYS WERE MORE IMPORTANT.Originally Posted by WINJA
I haven't read ALL the replies here, but these are my thoughts:
My, it must be election time again... What with Helen surviving in-flight carnage and now the big crack down on the "seedy underworld" of the police force. I mean, it it too much to expect that police officers can't be robots? They should do nothing but work, while giving out no tickets and responding to ALL calls, with 100% accuracy. While they are not working, they should be sleeping, dreaming about going back to work... pffft!
The fact of the matter is that police are JUST like everyone else in normal jobs. And, thats because being a police officer IS a normal job. Has anyone stopped to consider that these images may have been unsolicited? Have you EVER been sent something slightly objectionable via email, of which you didn't ask for? You don't always delete things immediately, and even when you do, they are never really deleted, always recoverable with cache copies in places experienced people can easily find. You might be surprised to know that some of the images respectable officers are now being investigated on, are nothing more than black and white adult humour sketches, cartoons even.
While it is obvious that work computers are not the place for personal data of this sort, and there should be some stronger network restrictions regarding internet and e-mail policies, I really feel this is nothing more than a media fuelled, pre-election "witch hunt". Not everyone looks at pornography (and not all pornography has to be disgusting, vile and repulsive acts by human or animal), even those who do not partake in it can't deny that it IS legal between consenting adults, and the purchasers of such content. Why should police officers not be allowed the choice that all of us have? I have no problem with members of the police looking at adult material should they so please. My ONLY proviso is that they do it at home, and keep it off the business computers, like everyone else who works has to do (those that choose to look at such material).
I'm sick of the continous attacks on the police. There's no wonder why they are under staffed, and why the existing staff are under pressure!
PS: I'm not saying I do, or don't, this is an impartial opinion.

Those who insist on perfect safety, don't have the balls to live in the real world.
I don't think that many will lose their jobs. There are a very small number that have material that may result in prosecution, these folks may be the ones that get the chop. The vast majority consisted of material that was innapropriate but not objectionable. These folks will face internal disciplinary measures but not the sack. The organisation couldn't handle losing 300 odd cops in one go.Originally Posted by riffer
