    New to the dirt thing

    Hey guys,

So I have just gone out and got me self an 09 YZF250 and am looking to do some trail rides. Is there any going on around the welly region? or even just some cool places to ride (other than Karapoti & red rocks)
    Cheers guys and gals.

Welcome to the dark side. Be prepared to have more fun than you can handle.... There is a trail ride starting from Totara park, Upper Hutt this weekend (sunday?) that is being held. Im still in Aussie, so wont make it unfortunately.

Check out silverbullet.co.nz for a list of events going on, theres trail rides every now and again, usually the better ones round here are the ones in the Manawatu, or so I've found.

Otherwise both Long Gulley farm and Tangimoana are good options as far as places to ride, and theres some wicked stuff up Karapoti once ya really start exploring.

I'm out on the bike at least once a week and hopefully more over summer so chuck me a pm if ya wanna come out for a blat with us sometime

As a relative beginner I would suggest that if you go to karapoti avoid rock garden and the devil staircase in the wet.

RITTR did you go to Long Gully last weekend or was it too windy?

I'd say avoid those in the dry as a beginner too, get some skills about ya before putting yaself in places that are harder to get out of than into....

Headed up on Saturday arvo, was a pearler day for it and all was going well untill just before we were planning to leave I had a big stack off a jump. Concussed, Cracked ribs and everything else just plain hurting isn't a good feeling.

Was planning to head up again on Sunday but I was in no state. Weather appeared doable tho! My general rule of thumb is 25kmph and under winds are all good! Theres only really one jump that gets super dodgy in the wind, but even thats doable at 25 (measured off the Met Service webcam readings).

Hey , is long gully still around is it? i cut my teeth down there back in the day
and would love to cut some laps around there again .
whats up with the place now?

Congrats on the new bike driftn, good choice to. Take your time to learn the offroad skills before you get to keen on a mx track, its a diffrent skill set but if you dont mind sliding the bike around a bit most road riders go fine on the dirt. The good trail rides up here in the manawatu are starting up soon so dont be shy to flick me a pm if your coming up and want someone to tag along with .

    Yeah thats the one.

Went out last week end, ended up at the rock garden. was with a mate on his YFZ450 and the track is pretty skinny from the top so I did a little recon mission to see if there is any where to turn said quad around. only went down about 100 meters or so and pussyed out. will hit it in a few months when I get used to this off road lark.

There is a nice open gravel road up Karapoti that on the way back when I was in front of grant and could see where I was going I had an absolute blast sliding round the turns. Found it a little tricky getting out of the road habbit of getting off the inside of the bike but once that was sorted it was nice big slides followed by nice big sliding wheelies. I LOVE IT
