I am confused has the argument not been that motorcycles cost more, when did frequency come in to it? And of course those figures could be disproved with insurance claims for accident damage to cars as a majority of car crashes are unreported due to no injury,Based on 2008 payouts, motorcyclists cost $12,013 per claim – lower than the average payouts for crashes involving trucks ($17,807), passenger cars ($14,885), pedestrians ($13,678) and cyclists ($12,626).
However, ACC Minister Nick Smith said accident frequency had to be considered alongside costs.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.

Here from TNZ's own statistics: "The number of motorcyclist casualties dropped markedly during the 1990s. However, since 2000 there has been no further decrease and since 2005 the number has increased. The drop during the 1990s was particularly marked among the young – the number of 15-19 year old motorcyclists killed and injured each year is now about 13% of what it was in the early eighties. The average age of motorcycle casualties has risen over the last 25 years, from 22 in 1980 to 35 in 2007. This reflects a trend away from motorcycling among the young. Motorcyclists now make up only eight percent of all road users injured, compared to 21 percent in the early and mid-1980s."
We are now at similar numbers to 1996.
BUT in 1996 there was 46,000 registered bikes. In 2008 there was 96,000 registered bikes. http://www.transport.govt.nz/researc...%20crashes.pdf
So we have more than doubled the amount of bikes on the road. That means we have in the ten years Mr Smith talks about dropped the injuries/deaths with 45 - 50%!!
Typical BS to justify something that HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH COSTS but with selling ACC and politics.
