The cost is NOT the same for all people who break their legs.
Depends what he does for a job, if he's a desk jockey then he may be able to continue working with no other compensation from ACC. If however he is a builder for example and is no longer able to work then ACC will be compensating him 80% of his wage while he is unable to work. Thats when the cost begins to sky rocket.
From what I have read elsewhere he broke his femur (poor sod, would have been excruciating) so may be off work for quite a while.
