So I forgot about the disc brake lock...

I forgot to remove my disc brake lock and tried to ride off. Thankfully I was only rolling slowly and didn't bail but the impact was great enough to bend the pin in the lock. Now the chamber popped open but the pin won't come out, so basically I've got one super safe bike that isn't going anyway. Since the key is useless, how would I go about getting the thing cut off?

You not the only one who would have forgotten to take a disc brake/wheel lock off before riding or moving a bike! making the lock crunch the front guard..... so I have heard!

It depends on how its lodged in/bent and what the lock is made of etc. Discs are usually a fairly brittle material so I'd advise against (further) impact to take it off. Maybe a well placed angle grinder?

Got steady hands? Hacksaw it off...

Got access to an angle grinder, use a 1mm blade. Trynot to fuck the brake disc.

Having seen similar threads in the past I took precautions to prevent me doing the same thing during our West Coast tour last week. The main thing I did was to flog a large rubber band from somewhere and put it around the disc lock when not used. When I applied the disk lock I'd then put the rubber band around my key wallet with just the disk lock key sticking out and the ignition key all wrapped up inside the wallet. Worked a treat. Impossible to forget then. I also put it on the disk on the side of the bike that I would approach it from so I would see it. That was only a 'heads-up' strategy though.

bummer dude. Maybe google it, but my guess is a cutting disk on grinder. My own forgetful self always feared this exact scenario, which is why I bought an alarmed disk lock (although it can be a bastard & go off without any movement for unknown reasons). Other options for the future are the long fluro telephone cord type bungy that connects to your bars from the lock so you can see it before you start your journey. Some disc locks come with them in the pack.
    Good luck with the cutting.

and remember to get one of those bright coloured springy elasticy thingies that u can attach onto your handle bars to the discs. I think they are called disk lock reminders or sth.

You are lucky. I heard someone literally broke off the caliper by a similar accident. Which would have cost $$$ to fix (Quite a high price for "fail to remember")

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

Thanks, I am going to attempt to get it off using an angle grinder, seems to be what best option google is telling me. It's going to be tricky to not damage the disc but we'll see.
Yeah I also came across those 'telephone' style reminder cords, think I'll get one of those with my next one so that I dont forget again and as you say, possibly break a disc or caliper.

    Bummer.

I've seen people put a large runner band around the throttle to remind them.

I guess a condom would do in lieu of a rubber band. Ribbed of course for better grip.......

I think careful use of a disc grinder is probably your best option and the next time you use a disc lock use a tell tail, you should be able to pick one of these up from almost any decent bike shop, put it this way if they sell disc locks they should sell the tell tail to go with it too.

If you don't have access to a grinder and appropriate cutting disc ( I highly recommend a 1 mm disc , super fucken quick and accurate) take the wheel off and take it to an engineering shop.

If your local to Penrose go see Morgan Engineering (63 maurice road) opposite Mt Smart stadium

Something i've wondered, when you apply the lock (assuming you apply it under the caliper) can you not roll the bike forward till the lock is essentially touching the caliper so if you did forget the bike will either stall or you get a little skid from the front...Just an idea.

The best idea is having a flouro cable from the lock to the ignition i think.

JJ Had the same thing happen to me , I'd owned the 'Busa for about 2 weeks and parked it up outside the Harley shop in Manchester street ( Thought I'd put the cat amongst the pigeons ) ..After an hour I came back and Mister Cool swaggered onto my Bike and , with about 10 Harley Guys watching, clicked it into first and took off ...CLUNK ! My Disc lock was still clicked onto the rear disc . Fucked the lock but not quite. The interesting thing was a couple of the guys saw me and came and helped me out with some tools, a small crow bar and about ten minutes was all it took to lever it off. No laughing at all from the Hog guys but I felt like a dick. It had jammed up under the rear disc and the swingarm big time....As the other Guys have suggested try a disc grinder . Ps no damage to the Bike , not a scratch

Surfboard leg straps work well as disc lock reminders.
Rope end tethered through lock, velcro end wrapped around throttle.
Cheap, light, and you never forget.
