Costs of riding a bike?

not really sure where I had to post this.. so here it went.

I just moved here from Holland and I am going to get my learner license in a few weeks. Planning to buy a 250cc magna when I've got my license, but now I've got a question.
What costs come with driving a motorcycle in New Zealand?
In holland we've got insurence and a road tax. how is this here? Of course there is fuel and insurance but how about some sort of road tax?
And how much would insurance and the "road tax" be for a 22y old male?

I certainly hope you can help me with this!

costs are insurance, servicing your bike, bike registration and protective clothing for winter and summer.

As far as road tax goes here in NZ, a few cents is put on to each litre of fuel you buy.

your bike registration has a huge ACC component built into it ( this covers costs in an accident).

bike insurance premium and excess will depend on your age (22yr...and which insurance company you go with).

For petrol driven motorcycles over 61cc the licensing fees (road tax including accident compensation insurance -ACC*) is $86.00 for three months, or $164.41 for six months or $321.24 for 12 months. Haven't been in NZ lately but I gather that the ACC component may be going up?

Aside from that you need to get a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) every 6 months for a motorcycle older than 6 years, or every 12 months for a motorcycle younger than six years. This is done by a vehicle checking centre or shop and costs around $45 (last time I checked).

*just thought I should add ACC is universal no-fault insurance for personal injury only, will not cover damage to your vehicle or any vehicle you may damage in an accident so you might want to consider vehicle insurance.

We have no road tax to pay. And insurance is up to you. It is not compulsory. However,it would be in your best interest to have insurance, should you need to recover the cost of your bike, or are at fault with another vehicle. Cost varies greatly. And I am not sure of this cost, but would imagine it would be likely to be about $800 per year. Yearly registration fees are increasing, and Johnathon has given you the link for that. Only other thing to pay for is a warrant of fitness. Required every 6 months, and costs around $40 - depending on where you go. Any bike shop should be able to help you find a good place to take your bike depending on where you live, of course

I've got an 2008 intruder that I want to buy (not the magna) and that would cost about 700 to insure for a year. Thats full coverage plus 3rd party, fire and theft. Don't know if NAC also covers 3rd party, fire and theft.. should ask about that.

total costs would come to; registration and licensing would come to ~700, ~700 insurance and WOF, petrol and servicing.. I guess a rough total of 2000 a year. Should be able to do that..

I will do like a learn to drive, and then the practical test...

Re: your learners, it depends on if you can ride already. I had ridden motorbikes for years prior to getting my learners licence so I didn't bother sitting the whole course, just the BHS component of it.

Basically, you need to get your BHS certificate. Different regions have different providers but the main one in Wellington would probably be Roadsafe run by Andrew and Lynne Templeton. I rocked up to the test on my FZR1000, hopped off onto a GN125 and did the course...got my cert and toddled off to a vehicle testing station (VTNZ). Apply for your learner licence, show your BHS cert, pass a scratchie theory test (samples can be bought from BP service stations) and off you go with your learners.

Can't remember the exact costs but all for under $200 from memory.....

If you can't ride and require training first, they run a day course which is followed by the test for your certificate.

Your insurance.. Is that full coverage or 3rd Party - Fire and Theft?

I am 20 years old and with state and My insurance is $480 a year and thats Comprehensive..

that would be comprehensive and 3rd party. As you know I'm quite new to NZ and I was under the assumption the comprehensive doesn't cover 3rd party? If it does, a comprehensive cover would be enough and that would be about 400 through kwibiker.. which is even better than the 700 I said before

There is no practical test or learn to ride course.

There is the basic handling skills "course", which is hardly a course. Some of the BHS course are easy and takes 20min, and others with take ages and will put you to sleep. If you know what you are doing already, then you need the easy "course" if you know where to find one. hehe.

Yes, theory test is easy if you know it.

The Comprehencive Insurence cover will include 3rd party.

Third Party Only used to be as cheap as chips many years ago. The theory was that bikes actually don't do too much damage to others when they crash. Most claims are for a totalled bike that is written off due to a few scrapes in the plastic!

Insurance for a vehicle is NOT compulsory in NZ, BUT I fully recommend getting 3rd party fire and theft as a bare minimum. $400 though, that isn't too bad at all.

Don't forget to factor in speeding tickets, they are a given these days as police never exercise discretion. They will ticket you for the most insignificant of transgressions.

well, I am a very decent driver. Only had 1 speeding ticket while driving a car for 4 years, and that was because the road was changing from 80 to 70 and back all the time.. and I saw the 80 sign and put on cruise control..

I don't think they will be able to give me a speeding ticket when I'm not speeding, as I don't plan to.. That's why I am getting a chopper, not a racing bike.
