42nd Traverse

A few of us are planning on riding the 42nd on the way north from Wellington to Britton's Far North Adv Ride in early December. Can someone please tell me if the entrance to the 42nd is before Owhango? I am trying to figure out some travelling times so we don't arrive too late in the day to complete a 'both ways' excursion. Ta.

The western entrance is right at Owhango.

Heading North the southern entrance is from Kapoors Road, which is off SH47 between National Park and Turangi, more towards the Turangi End.

The North or Western Entrance as Clint says comes out in the backstreets of Owhango village.

Download the GPS tracklogs from my signature below or visit CooneyR's www.advroutes.co.nz website. Both places will provide a tracklog which can be overlaid into GoogleEarth or Mapsource if you have a Garmin GPS and will show you exactly where it and others are.

There's also Fishers Track there which runs from National Park to Owhango on the West side of SH4 which is fun, again a tracklog for that can be obtained from both places.

Surely, would you not do it the 1 way, ie northwards(?) and then continue on riding to the far north, in true adventurer style?

Methinks there is a trailer involved Jamie......I don't see a 450EXC being ridden from Welly!

Hah....some bloody 'adventure' rider.

Seen these type of dudes before at similar 'adventure' events....all tooled up with psuedo 'road legal' endo's! Thats why the organisers have to increase the difficulty of the events to keep the 'specialist' tools happy!

Makes these events a challenge on a 990

Put the 450exc back in its natural enviroment and leave 'adventure rides' to...adventurers!!!

(oh and....my user info does not actually tell anyone wots in my shed here or abroad...so does anyone elses do you think Iain?)

I know what you mean about the adventure / trail rides blend, I'm doing this ride as well (Dec 5&6) so I'll let you know how it goes.....I figure the 640 isn't a big bike so should be worth a shot on the more "trail" route, I keep remembering your experience last year on the DR so I may regret this decision!

Anyone else here doing this ride?

Ah - I dont have either of those routes on the web site. Bloody life never slows down enough for me to add more routes to it at the moment. Best to getthose track logs down loaded from your signature link Eddieb.

Should have done this earlier.....seems to take me about an hour and a half one way on the traverse, depends on how high the rivers are and if there is a large group or not. If you're starting from Owhango there is car & trailer parking space at the first bridge, ride in from there (assumptions, assumptions) and when you get out at the other end the last 10kms is really only a gravel road so turn around when it starts to look like a road.

If you are riding from Welly, just do it once from the national park end, there's lots of good gravel riding from there north....

Couple of warnings.
Rivers can rise quickly if it's raining.
There are a lot of others on the track, mountainbikes, quads & motorcycles and (I think) it opens for 4x4s in december which would be nasty as they would completely block the track.

It's a good ride tho, enjoy.

Thanks for your constructive, unbiased comments CM. Isn't it a shame when some motorcyclists' petty prejudices and uninformed assumptions about fellow riders and their bikes are publically aired, creating unnecessary animosity and confirmation of ignorance - dude!

Don't be put off by my experience you talk of last year, that was Des Trubshoes "mid north adv ride' outta Trounsen park,( he's a notorious hard man!!) and the issue was much more MY ability to handle the DR in the prevailing conditions( although, I still belive I was or nearly was, the only one who had a bike that could be and was, ridden to the- 'road regd/wofed' event)
So, you betta keep away from me Iain, deny all knowledge of me to any ktm450 riders!!!

Oh good, as a back up you can pick up my 200 and take that for me should plan A fail......

It will be good to catch up Iain, but with both of us 'hard out' doing discreet, I thinks we will not be able to 'link up'!!!!

For those who know me, I will not be hard to spot!

I do hope 'jimmy' catches up with me - he can shout me a coupla beers and I can try and bore him senseless with my bigoted opinions!!!
