Spotting yourself, yep, unless it's a nice close shot you have to remember what you were wearing etc on the day. Colourful bags on backs or bikes and the odd fluro jacket stand out from the rest making them easier to identify in the crowd.

Im not going to be able to make it this year I have a wedding anniversary and a 50th in CHCH to attend

This year my intention is to hang with Balrog for a lot of it so might get some more big bike action?
Still have to raise the money for it yet, and do some minor repairs to gear.

Joe - 4Skins aka John Forsyth aims to make this ride suitable for competent riders of larger machines - shod with the appropriate tyres being a strong recommendation. I've done previous events on my 1150GS - but enjoyed it more on a DR350 - you'll be fine - cheers Aslan

Get some decent tyres (TKC80 or equivalent) and you'll be fine. Full knobbies if you're not too worried about DOT compliance even better.
There were several 950/990s on the last runplus some big BMWs as well.

IIRC there was one 990 ridden through the rougher bits by a rider with a broken collar bone...the bastard passed me too!

That was my Brother-In-Law, Mark Hartstone.
His shoulder is only now fully recovered.

No money forthcoming, but an observation: the Tussock will be more technical/hard-out riding (particularly with the 640A), but I dare say the CCA more sociable, with adv acquaintances coming from all over the country.

Will I be ok on Scorpions? I have a pair that have 1.5mm of tread left and I don't want to replace them until 2012.

What sort of oil should I use, is Supercheap diesel ok?

Will the weather be ok, I don't want to have to wash the bike both days?

Colin, I'm not sure I would ride the Tussock buster on the 640, it is certainly do-able but would be a pain in the arse on the tight bits, I was thinking of the 200 for that task!

I've got a bit worn rear E07 on my KLR. It's pretty good on everything but slippery wet. Do you actually need knobbllies? - if so I will buy one no probs. If there are nana lines around tricky stuff no probs.

I would have done the last one on E 07's.. I did all but one technical section, two up.

It was pretty dry most places...

Now in saying that.. if its wet.....

I personally will be on something with bite.. I would prefer to wear out a good aggressive rubber than have a crap day trying to pull, drag and kick my bike out of the crap.....

Yes. put something chunkier on there, you will like it. TKC80 or better is the recommendation, best to follow it. Besides, you don't have far to travel, and if marks takes you bush you'll need all the traction you can get, plus a snorkel.

On the CCA the tricky stuff, such as it is, is in longer optional sections. It's not like on a trail ride where there is say a short bog hole with a dry bypass. Most of the challenge sections are linear/through routes that you need to complete, or don't start. There's no point in paying the entry fee, paying for a ferry ride or two, then riding the day on crappy tyres so all you do is pootle about on good gravel roads - unless that is new to you, in which case you'll have a blast. But for experienced adventurers you will want a decent tyre to do the challenge sections which are more interesting to ride and view.

The dry challenge bits are about as tough as the tricky hills on the Maungatapu; the wet bits easier than the stuff we've done in Hira forest, but could devolve to that with lots of rain. TKC80, E09, T63, MT21, D606 anything of that caliber will be fine.

I rode some of it last weekend and yes I would strongly recommend a proper chunky tyre. The section I covered included multiple decent length declines on loose surfaces, the sort of thing were you are braking heavily on loose dirt steeply downhill into a 90 degree bend, and there quite a few uphills in the reverse order.

I took a good Conti Escape off and put a brand new E-09 on for the ride and was glad I did, i think I might have been in serious trouble a few times had I left the Conti on.
