Please also ensure you have read the bottom of this page: http://ccadv08.blogspot.com/2007/09/entry-form.html about the requirement for ALL riders to carry a fire extinguisher, as a condition of entry required by landowners.

Bit of a laugh, does that mean that the last two or three years of DB1K don't count as Adventure rides?
May be they don't qualify for some reason, may be because they are free to enter (except the toll roads) or does the South Island stuff not count?? CraZY

It shouldn't matter that the tracks are not on the base map just like a lot of the walking tracks are also not on the maps but you can access track logs and route files for a lot of that stuff.A lot of the course will not be GPS navigable as the tracks we use will not be on the base maps, you will be following a 'bread crumb' trail. You will need to use a route sheet as well (or at least ride with someone who is using one). We welcome your feedback on how to improve it.
The way it's been done on the South Island Dusty Butt 1000km Adventures is probably about as good as you're going to be able to do. just cut down the files until you have a series of routes to navigate in order with 50 to 250 points each depending upon the GPS units they are intended for. Then navigate in the 'Off Road' format so as to stop any auto routing interfering and taking different people different ways depending again upon the maps they have loaded.
Whether there is a sealed road there, a farm track or just a riverbed, making the entire course file designed to be used in the 'Off Road' navigation mode is the key in my opinion.
If I receive one big tracklog file from you guys then the first thing I will be doing is cutting it down to sections and converting it to numbered route files. The 300km of CCA should be easy after the 1000km each Nelson based and Otago based routes of DB files .
Hmm, perhaps I should email these comments to the cca email address directly?

Yep.
Off road navigation, no re-calculation.
I made the 1st DB1K route in 25 waypoint chunks with a waypoint on each major intersection/decision point and another WP 100m or so in the new direction. Makes sure you're heading on the right track
My old b/w Legend had no issues and even told you you were coming up on a turn when you approached them.
Effectively an electronic rollchart.
Here's Big Dave's impressions of the Capital Coast from a few years ago.

I've been biting my tongue. Like you said TA. DB1k is free so it probably doesn't count - despite the 40+ hours I put into preparing the GPS file and at least the same again for the roll chart.
Oh well. Good to see people trying to use the technology at least. I agree 100% with the offroad routing. Create a route file/s with 250 points in each. If 250 points is not enough points for the whole day do a morning and afternoon rout file. The route files do not need any map whatsoever to work i.e. can use them on the basic old eTrex with no mapping but they probably don't prompt you when you are approaching a turn.

Those from the Sth isalnd ferrying over - what sailing are yous coming back on? I think I'll go over fri avo but if we're riding Sunday as well what time are you leaving?
My sailings post is over here in the travelling to/from CCA thread. Think I'm the only South Islander who has posted details so far.
I'm not doing any extra riding this trip, just straight up and straight back. Can't afford extra time off work.
Cyna was going bluebridge, heading up on the fri 2pm and back on sunday at 1pm. last I heard. Don't know any others.
Made the entry payment online today (will post entry form shortly) so definitely going.

The last installment of my CCA-2008 YouTube uploads is done.
It's the 10minute highlight/overview/short of the whole ride. If you want more you'll have to buy a DVD from me. Probably $15 worth and that won't even scratch the surface of what I put in to it.
Anyway, hope you like....

Cool. Looks like an extended laid back trail ride.
Excellent clip there Transalper - it brought back some great memories of the 2008 CCA. I was glad I took John's advice re knobblies too!!
Unlikely I can make it this year so very envious of all you guys who are going.
Have a great ride.......
Yip, good video TA. I laughed as those bikes went the wrong way, down the big grassy hill with a fence inbetween.
So I asked my wife if we had a clikclak container for a routesheet holder 'No" . Clever me found one & started drilling holes. But it was the mother in laws - probably no home baking for Andy for a while![]()
