    mech tips day in order?

A few n00bs have been asking about their bikes and what to do, and most of it seems to be what more experianced bikers would consider fairly easy stuff to do, you just got to know what to look for..

So this got my nuggin thinkin (instead of workin, which I should be doin).

How about we get some volunteers (myself included) all in one spot for a morning or afternoon, and then anyone who's wanting to know more about their bike and others, and learn (hopefully) a thing or two about how to look after their bike, come over and ask, and watch others' bikes with different problems too.

Would this be a yay or nay? If yay, and there's enough peeps, then I'll post a proper thread in the meetings and events bit with specific details.

*** Just want to stick in a disclaimer here - By no means am I intending to run workshops out of business. Those guys are legends, but doing some basic stuff yourself allows these guys to breathe a bit, and work on bigger projects which they need to do. On saying that tho, by no means should you attempt to try to fix something if you are unsure. Most of the bike isn't there to look pretty - it's there for a reason, so if you play with it and it breaks, you could be putting yourself and others at risk. ***

    I like the idea
To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods

THIS is what KB is all about. Good luck with this idea.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

yeah, that's a good start.. Anything and everything people are wanting to know. Even changing brake pads isn't a huge mechanical feat. Once you understand the simple bits, other bits will fall into place... And for this, it would be Auckland, unless anyone wants to fly me else where!

A bit of background on me, just in case anyone is wonder what makes me qualified - well, nothing really does, but what I've done in the past; built/rebuilt a few bikes (one was in bits in a barn for 6 years before I bought it and built it), worked in numerous car/bike garages in the UK while at college and school, had several sad excuses for cars in the UK and kept them all running, love to tinker and build etc etc.. and just been mechanically minded since I could walk.. One thing I've not had a heap of experiance with tho, are 2smokes. Anything aside from the engine is fine, but I've not had heaps of work on those, so there's only so much before I start scratching my head. Can't be too hard, but I'd be asking before long

Others are probably way more qualified than I, but I love all things mechanical, and I know what I know. Anything I don't know, I would find out and/or get someone who did know to do it..

I have enough tools for most jobs too, but cos I only have one bike and one pair of hands, that's really only one set of tools. If it ends up being a couple of 'gurus' (in the loosest term) and a few bikes to go over, then we'll probably be ok, but if it gets more, then I'm sure we could work things out. Also for the venue, I have a fair sized drive and lawn (not huge, but be enough) and garage to tinker in, else if anyone has a workshop and/or bigger place and willing, then shout out..

And as for other regions, may be someone in the other towns can spin something off this, and cater for our n00bs in Welly and Chchchchchch etc..

    See here: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=5758

ahhhhh.. thanks for that. See, that one was slightly before my time, and there's been quite a few n00bs join since too (even after me!).

so.. what now? Frosty, any suggestions? Want to take over since you'd have a better understanding of a day then?

Bloody good idea Bug'. It was very successfull when Frosty did them.

People need to be more aware of the maintainence issues of their machines.
