    Editing vids?

I know theres a few guys running around with gopros vios tachions etc:

Must be some good video editors out there ?

The VholdR shoots awesome quality to .mov.
Up until recently we hadn't really attempted to edit them.
Now we are trying to do some editing but we are having trouble.
You can just rename the .mov to mp4 and it plays, but with no sound.
I have tried various converters to try and convert to avi xvid mp4 but allways seem to lose quality.
Always mucking around with the resolution 848 x 480 or whatever, but again seem to lose quality and make bigger files ?
Last night I tried app called handbrake, and it initially didnt work at all just but a dos box on the scrren for maybe 2 seconds after pressing the start button, and made something called umm a something dump ?...(1kb)
Anyway eventually it worked and the dos box stayed on the screen showing % progress , made an awesome avi xvid mp4 with very similar quality to the original .mov, but alas has no sound .....sigh .
Now it wont work at all again and just does the 2 second dos box , and the 1 kb file ....
    &)!#&*(&Q(@#*#(Qb \

We have also been playing around with sony vegas pro, which looks a few rungs up the ladder from what we really need, but looks like it will be a doddle to edit crop / join etc: with

So anyone know a solid system that works ?
Should we be able to make a dvd that runs on the tv and actually looks like it has good res or am I in lalaa land thinking this ?
Its not the end of the world if I cant but making some watchable movies for the pc would be fine

    Any help or direction appreciated

Blender is very good, very capable and very hard to learn.

    2/3 isn't bad.

Premier is a good package, can also edit sound (lower music and raise recorded sound).

find Final cut that is becoming a standard in the TV world

you can normally down load this for free somewhere
most likey the reason for the loss in quality is in the rewrap (codec)that is used it could be of a lower quailty

I wont go into 4:2:2 v4:1;1 or IMX30 V dv25 there is so many diferent formats out there

Find out what the camera you are using is recording in and go form there

Windows movie maker only works with wmv's
So ,We need some solid system that people have used themselves that they know will convert mov to (some other vid format) and still retain the high res and clarity.

i had the same problem with my vholder, i used windows movie maker to edit my vids, and to get the sound i had to download the latest DIVX driver (free divx.com) also make sure you installed the software that came with the vholder as it has its own special drivers etc..

    Hi Glenn,
I use a product called Video Studio Prox2 but I don't like the latest version and am looking at products like adobe premier to use in the future.

I just had a look at the contour site and there is a video editor that you can download from there which might be a starting point.

You may find that you have to convert the format from HD to something else to edit using other software-depending on whether you want to output to HD or not.

I have to convert the source files from my camera to something I can edit-Ulead does this for me but I am not sure whether I have some kind of software/codec conflict that means that I have to do this conversion

Did you get software with the camera-you may need to load the specific codec required to edit.

Put some footage on a DVD for me and I will try it out in Ulead if you like

depends on if you have an HD DVD player

Glenn stop pissing around. Burn me one of these said .mov's to a DVD and hand it over to me at the Glen Murray ride. I'll pull it apart and sort out the best process for you to follow. If you don't have the proper software I'll link you to the correct torrents.

What do you recommend as a general editor?

    For windows...Premiere CS4.
Excellent, you don't need a dedicated video card for it. You can scrub the timeline realtime and preview your transitions instantly. If you have lost sound it's generally a lack of the sound filter in your OS. It's easy to add codecs such as AC3 dolby to CS4 and after a reload wullah instant sound.
There aren't many off the shelf editors that are equiped to sort this sound dropout issue that Glenn is experiencing.
