What would $2000 buy?

Hi there, any recommendations regarding buying a motorcross bike for around the $2k mark-had my first ride on a dirtbike at a motocross track the other day and I'm hooked, I have a new found respect for motorcrossers - it was tough going but fun- I'm in me late 30's so not looking for anything to rip my arms off

You'd be better getting a 125 because for that sort of money it will be newer than a 250.

A stroppy motocrosser that's had a hard life might not be the best to start on. Maybe consider a DRZ or KLX type bike. Sell in 6mths/year when your ready for something more serious.

I raced a KTM 125 nationally at 6ft 5" and 94kg and it was fine, not to mention enjoyable and easy to ride.


It was only when I turned senior (last year) that I jumped on a 250 2 stroke.


Don't dismiss the 125's, they're awesome bikes.

Well, there ya go. Different strokes for different folks. Personally, if you going to do any bush riding etc apart from straight Mx, id look at a 250 at least. Saves you ringing the arse off a 125 on hills and rutty/muddy sections. maybe the 4 stroke thing might be the go if you off the mx track a bit as well. A drz or xr would be a pleasure to ride for a first time off roader... The KX 250 is actually a pretty good all rounder, they have a strong bottom end/mid for a two banger ... and can accomodate the trails or mx.

I have to agree with Secondfield. 125's need to held in the power to go anywhere which is often difficult in the bush. Add to that the all or nothing power delivery that just adds one more thing to think about on the mx track and I'd definately be looking to spend my money elsewhere if I were starting out.

As much as I hate to say it I just don't think the 125's are on any sort of level as compared to the 250 four strokes or two strokes alike. Considering the poster stated "on a motocross track" and knowing that especially when learning most people like to go other places too this is what I'd reccomend. DR's KLX's XR's etc won't hack it on a track and although a 125 would do it all they make things harder than they need to be.

As posted above the likes of a older RM250 can be had for that money which if in good nick will last you well. Alternatively if you think saving is possible I'd try and pull together 3k and go for a newer bike preferably a 250 four stroke. We picked up a 04 RMZ250 on Saturday for $2800 tidy as nothing needs doing even had a new rear tire and a couple spare levers. 1st time rider/owner took it out on Sunday and had an absolute ball. Went really well and the bike was outstanding, progressed heaps in one arvo and came out smiling ear to ear.

if you are serious about racing mx, and getting good at it, get a 125 - best bike by far to start with for improving your skills.

If you want to do trial riding too, and are still really serious about improving your skill level, and maybe go racing one day, get a 125 - the learning curve will be steep, and at times when you're in a bog and your mate chugs by on their 250/300/450 etc you'll want a torquier bike...but in learning to get through the bog or up the slippery, wet clay hill on a 125, two years later you'll be a much better rider....
