If a 125 sounds like hard work and not fun, I only had $2k, I'd get a KDX200...like this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-254127441.htm

if I just wanted to stick to mx tracks and start racing one day, I'd get something like this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...-255554897.htm for say $1500 and have $500 left for freshening it up.
    well said!
also, 125's use very little fuel on trail rides, so no stressing about running out half way around a loop

You won't know until you see if but expect a top end (piston/rings), fluids all round and the odd seal or two and maybe bearings like the swing arm and wheels, hand grips, etc....if you can learn to do all that by yourself (if you don't already know) $500 would cover it.

Other items might be chain and sprockets, and sunds like a quick patch weld needed by your local engineering shop for the expansion chamber is needed undless you can weld with tig/mig (I think for an expansion chamber)?

Keep an ear out, could be a 06 RMZ 250 going cheap
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

this looks like a pretty good starting point if the hours since rebuild are genuine
