What do you guys think of a Yamaha trx850?

Had someone offer me one of these in good condition for my v8 commodore im selling.

Trying to get an idea on what sort of a bike they are, and if there is much of a market for them.. ie i want to ride it for a little while and then on sell it maybe january.

Wanting to know what someone would pay for a good condition one (quickish sale sort of price).

And what are they like to ride, hope they aren't so much fun i want to keep it and sell my gsxr instead lol.

    Cheers guys

The same as your V8 Commodore is worth, minus two months depreciation.

Two Wheels magazine gave them a Bike of the Year award a few years back.

They're light and very nimble. Basically a Japanese interpretation of the SS900.
The greatest pleasure of my recent life has been speed on the road. . . . I lose detail at even moderate speed but gain comprehension. . . . I could write for hours on the lustfulness of moving swiftly.

Personally I find it to be a bloody good bike, probably one of the most enjoyable road bikes I've ever ridden. It feels more practical than a hotted up FZ1 I've ridden, and for the same price as a decent motard it gives you the ability to enjoy the twisty roads but us also good for touring - I did nearly 900km in two days and it was fine. Only real problem is that the seat is fairly hard but you get used to it.

What sort of km's has it done and what if any mods has it had done? There are a few simple changes you can do for about $200 that will make it a much more enjoyable bike (from what I've read)... though mine came with a lot of extra goodies and a lot of stuff done to it so I haven't had to change anything apart from suspension adjustment.

I paid $6k for mine, a 1995 Japanese import with 6600km (yes less than 10k) on it. Cosmetically it was probably 8/10. It had FCR flatslide carbs, a 2-1 race pipe, race rear sets, ohlins rear shock, ohlins fork springs, billet top clamp, race clipons... etc etc, so pretty hotted up. A similarly spec'd bike with 12,000km sold for $6.5k a month or two ago - although it had YZF750SP front end.

If it's stock with under 30,000km it's probably worth about $5k. With 'high' km's start thinking more towards the $4k mark. They are bargain bikes in the UK usually going for around £1600-1800 with 50,000km and after market pipes. Though I did see a couple sell recent for about £900ish with 70,000km+

Basically it's an under-rated bike, which seems to be a little overpriced in NZ (from what I've seen). People who ride them seem to love them and I can say I am definitely one of them. Stock bikes have around 70hp+ and a well tuned bike can have anywhere from 80-90rwhp depending on how much money has been spend (cams, higher comp., exhaust, carb etc). My previous sportsbike was a GSXR1000K3 with about 150hp, I'd say my TRX is around 85hp, but then it is putting out about 20nm more torque than most 600's. I enjoy the TRX a lot more than I enjoyed the GSXR and If I had the choice I'd take a hotted up TRX over a hotted up GSXR1000/750/600 any day.

Just out of interest, do you have pics and details of the bike?

It is truly fulfilling to see a conversion to my religion take so well.

I think I'll hang up the halo.

I have a TDM, same motor but bouncier suspension & comfy seat. I love it. The TDM keeps sports bikes honest on windy roads so I reckon a TRX would be a blast. Sound great too.

they are under-rated. New they were quite expensive.
My son has one, and it was a tidy import for about $5.5k. I really like it.
When they get a few kays up they need front fork springs, a Dyno-Jet kit, etc, but with Michelin Pilot Road 2CTs they rock. Very neutral handling, shit loads of torque. They differ from the TDM in one important respect, in that the TRX has a different crank, and it makes them sound exactly like a TL1000, with the right pipes. The TDM sounds like it is, a parallell twin.

The TDM850 has a 180 degree crank, but the 900 is 270 degrees like the TRX.

I have had one for a few years now, a '95 import. Just got back from a ride to Warkworth and back down SH16. God I love my TRX. Cost me $4,500 with 50k on the clock. It's done 69,000 now and I expect it will just keep on going. Mine pops at idle when it is hot because the emultion (I can't speell) tubes are worn. I don't think I can get replacements. The bike just does what you tell it and just eats corners.
