    Billboard costs

    Would a billboard make sense?

Just thought I would throw this out there.

Out of curiosity I spoke to a billboard company who are supportive of our cause and are willing to offer discounts. (I have to declare an interest here as it is a member of the families company)

The play would be to use a billboard with a simple message on it that could be picked up by the TV and news papers. We only need one month as the aim is to use the billboard to get nationwide visibility in all the major papers and TV. Much cheaper than buying this directly.

The billboard company are willing to assist and know how to get this coverage.

    Costs

    6 x 3 metre billboard in Auckland
$3000 per month (we only need one month)
    $300 installation of artwork
    $840 artwork
    Less $1000 worthy cause discount
(KB has 5524 active members so this equates to 56 cents per KB member)

    12 x 3 metre billboard in Auckland
$8000 per month (we only need one month)
    $350 installation of artwork
    $1080 artwork
    Less $3000 worthy cause discount
(KB has 5524 active members so this equates to $1.16 per active KB member)

My feeling is a small billboard would work as well as the large one as the maing coverage is intended to come from TV and the newspapers.

Ya reckon we could get Tui on our side?

Some of their "yeah, right" billboards would be the go.

And they don't seem sissy about pissing people off.

Actually, the Tui boards are a great idea. All that's needed with them is a simple 1/2 lines of white lettering.
Only problem I foresee, is that their boards are social comments, not political. And the owner/board will be aligned with Business Roundtable...
Perhaps the sole board, done right, is the best way. It'll get more viewings potentially than any ad on TV for a lower cost.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

I think asking Tui would be a great idea!

I'll ask them, but I would think they will shy away from political comment.

Not a bad idea if there are funds available.

Retro Asian and Danae (the designers of the ACC protest tees and stickers) already have vector files that can be scaled to suit, so you can scrap the artwork costs (unless you mean the actual printing cost). I can give them a hand setting up the final artwork if need be.

My suggestion would be to go for the 12 x 3 format if at all possible as the 6 x 3 doesn't really cut through enough (unless it's in a very visible solo space). Do you have a list of sites available?

You do have to think about timing though. If the next big protest goes ahead in February, then February would be a good time for a billboard. With the silly season holidays almost upon us, a billboard right now (or even January) could be wasted as so many people head out of town.

There's an idea though... if the company has a site along one of the major arterial routes headed out of/in to the city (cities?), a billboard around this time may still be worthy of consideration. The only problem being people leave the cities to "get away from it all" and so are likely not to give the message much thought.

Still, if the funds are there, the right site is available at the right time... go for it.

Well, I did think that. But having thought of a few potential benefactors to our cause, they don't seem to mind winding people up (actually, them and Hell Pizza were about the only ones).

They've commented on the Super City and stuff before, so this may not be a huuuuuge stretch.

    Still, just a thought.

EDIT; "ACCs a no-fault scheme. Yeah, right"

    more than:

"Nick Smith tells the truth. Yeah, right."

Artwork cost is just for printing and media

Size in this case, isn't important the idea is only to use the billboard to get pictures of it in the papers nationwide and on the news. Cheaper than paying for it paper by paper.

There may be a list of sites on their web site here.

    Maybe.

If the purpose of the billboard is simply to get a photo of it in to newspapers or on TV, there are plenty of Photoshop users on KB who can knock up an image of our message on a billboard in 5 minutes.

If you're going to go to all the trouble of paying for an actual billboard to be printed and installed, you may as well make it work as hard as possible. Get maximum bang for buck. If size isn't so important, location still is.

Yes you could knock it up in photoshop but that aint news and therefore it won't be photographed and stuck in the paper or shown on TV you twit.

Location is important because if it goes up in central Auckland that's news....If it goes up in waiuku it ain't news.

Size ain't important because no matter what size you make it the photo in the paper or on TV will be the same image size.
