Standard rebuild is at about 16 or 18 thousand clicks... why did it need a top end before 10 thousand kms? Raced? Raped? Ran out of oil? Neglected?

^^ Yeah that is a concern, I'm assuming it was probably ran out of oil, since that'd screw the top end and leave the bottom ok. Hopefully someone went and looked today (I'll call them later and find out), so guess I'll see if it's still worth it soon.

While we're on the subject, what do you think I should be looking at for my bike? Last one I saw sold was a dereg'd stock racer that went for about $3000...

Or... and you're gonna love this... the molten bits of overheated piston rain hate down through the bottom end giving the crank enough death to give it a mighty short lifespan.

    Damn right, parts and labour.

In the end you pay your money and takes your chances... there are no unobtainable bits in that motor.

    Or photographs I reckon.

Mind you nothing is really 100% concrete. Receipts can be faked - Easily.

^^ Not really, it's not hard to spot a fake in most cases, and easy to check out at the shop anyway.

As it happens I couldn't get the price to what I wanted. Close, but in the end I have a max in mind that I'll pay sight unseen. I might give it a few days and offer the max again. I've been looking at a few on the market at similar prices that haven't moved in over a month, plus the fact there are at least 5 on Trademe atm, compared to the 1-2 a month there use to be. Some are slightly more, but either much newer, or same age and with full history. I've only just discovered that the 96s have a standard cable odo (98s on have a hard to tamper with digital one), so the Ks are somewhat suspect, being a this year import that has no overseas documentation.
