    Honda VTR250 buying guide questions

    Hi all

Decided to Save up and buy the Honda VTR250, Got everything expect a fuel gage (minor).

Close call between that and the Hornet, but the slightly less rev happy VTR just felt better to me.

The Ninja was crossed off my list at a fiend at an insurance company showed me the prices of the fairings. Ekkk

Anyway all a great bikes, but the VTR is the one I have decided to spend my money on.

    Anyway for my question.

Has anyone had experience with the VTR250 and is there anything special to look out for when buying one??

I know the basics things to watch out for when buying a bike but just want to know if there is any quirks with this model??

    Thanks in advance

    Balding eagle.

Anyway back to the saving but the gap between dreaming and reality is getting closer.

The VTR250 is probably the best learner bike there is, good luck with the hunting.
Others can probably provide more details.

A common mistake is not having enough oil in it,so with higher ks you might end up with crank problems.
Run it up, let it run for a few minutes then check your sight glass...make sure that its still on the max level....

There is a really usefull thread on buying second hand bikes in the online trading forum.

Nothing special to look out for on the VTR as far as I know. Good bike, my mate has one and has had no problems with it.

One tip for you - if you haven't got a fuel gauge then get into the habit of reseting your trip meter, on your speedo, when you fill up.
In time the Kms travelled, since you last fueled up, will let you know when you should fill up (bit of trial and error at the start in order to find out your range versus different riding styles - spirited vs commuting etc).

The stock tyres were not the greatest either. I threw on some Pirelli Sport Demons when it came time to do a change and the difference was like night and day. Could really track through the corners with confidence then.

    Thank for all the replies.

I know the basic of what to look for thanks to Buying guide thread. Was more looking at know quirks that are VTR have to watch out for.

Looking on the net, they seem top rather problem free other that the normal maintenance things.

Will keep an eye out on the oil levels, thanks Puddykat.

If anyone needs it I have a scanned copy of the VTR service manual, if anyone needs it I can email it to them. Warning it a large file of 31 MB

good luck getting a 31meg email to go through. I would not normally email more than 5meg. Might have to burn to disk & snail mail it to those that want it. Have heard of a thing called dropbox. Free web based app, might work.

should let you upload a 31mb file, and then you can just link the file in an e-mail.

theres a VT250 on TM at the mo, needs work, but at the quoted prices, it's still cheap

This is the only safe way to know your fuel remaining, unless you have a digital display and you calibrate it properly.

Yeah. Boof it on a webserver somewhere and email the link, or else start a torrent.

KB should have a torrent server for bike related stuff.

BE just a thought but the Spada 250 is the older version of the VTR. In my opinion it goes better than a VTR--and is more affordable price wise

Spada and the likes around 88-90 were more powerful than the VTR. Listen for Timing chain noises and replace if necessary (Budget 5-$800) Good oil and they live a long and healthy life. Sport demon tires are the business as well. Not too many problems with em and they last well.

I've had mine for over a year and it's run okay. Had a little issue with a small miss at the last service and had some work done on the carbs; I didn't even notice it to be honest but after I got it back it ran MUCH better. Other than that the engine has been trouble free.

I also read that you get a few rust spots around the bottom triple clamps and I do notice mine as a little bit (it's a 2007 and it's garaged, but i do ride in the rain). Just dry it off when you get home I suppose....

If the one you're looking at has a pack rack (ventura) make sure you take the seat off and check if it's rubbing on the plastic. I put some protective tape on there to stop mine.

Can't think of anything else really...
