You wouldn't think it would be hard to find somewhere (ok slightly harder today), but I can't find a single place I can buy a small amount of mild steel plate for doing some panel repairs... ideas anyone? (in Christchurch).

Go to a sheet metal company, they'll either have offcuts or can cut a bit for you on the press. I went to one down Falsgrave Street, opposite Iversen Terrace. They're a great bunch of guys who cut off some alloy plate and sold it to me for peanuts. Can't remember the name but I think it may have been Pioneer Sheet Metals Ltd.
My daughter telling me like it is:"There is an old man in your face daddy!"
Perhaps try a local engineering company, if it is a small piece. Today they will probably be closed though.

how thick? how big?
I was after some 10mm thick sheets a while ago for my garage to go over a small drain to make it easier to get in and out of the garage.
I asked my local mechanic, and he got it for me from one of his suppliers. They even pre-cut it (I have nothing to cut steel that thick).
I would suggest trying a few engineering workshops in the yellow pages.
Scrap metal dealers are always willing to trade too.
Arguing with an Engineer is like wrestling a pig in mud.
After a while you realise the pig is enjoying it.
How much do you need? Most of the places I would suggest are closed down over Xmas/New year period but if it just a scrap I might know where there is some to be had.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.
might be an idea to pot up and idea of the size and thickness you want.
The place on Falgrave st seems to be the most common suggestion, but of course won' be open for a while now.
Won't know 100% how much I need until I start, but I'll need a small amount of 2mm sheet, and at most a square metre of 1.2mm, but not necessarily in one piece, the biggest whole piece I'm likely to need will be maybe 30cm x 30cm, and I can patch a bit together if needed.
Got the sizes I will see what I can scrounge.

Priest Sheetmetal will supply. There is also a Sheetmetal place on Ferry Road by The Polly and one on Selwyn St by Hummingbird Coffee. All have supplied me small bits of steel and alloy.
^^ Thanks, gives me some more places to try. Not much likelyhood of getting anything till after New Years now though sadly.
