    Affordable bike hire?

Hi, myself and a couple of mates wish to hire bikes in NZ for a couple of weeks in Feb/Mar 2010, but are finding the prices very high.

We have hired bikes (Harleys) thru the HOG Fly/Ride program in the US for about $100 US per day and in OZ the price is about $130 Aus, but the cheapest Harley hire we can find in NZ starts at about $300 US per day.

Can anyone suggest a dealer who may hire Harley's at a more reasonable price?

We are happy to start / finish ouor trip at any town to suit the hire.

    many thanks in advance

I have seen his bikes and they are all late model well maintained machines his prices are similar to what you have been quoted but i dont think you will find anybody cheaper as it seems to be the going rate

The hire places shoot themselves in the foot a little.
I've got a mate that has four of his friends coming over from Aussie for a tour and they are buying bikes to ride. The loss that may be incured when they sell are far less than any hireage. They looked into hiring and discounted that idea pretty fast. I think one or two have bought already, not cheap bikes either.
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!

I've hired Harleys in Queenstown. The bikes were Heritage Soft Tails, only about 2 years old and in great condition. Jo was fantastic to deal with and may be up for some bargaining on a long term hire. we paid NZ$300 for a 9 hour day (about US$230)

I'm surprised someone isn't doing a buy-back scheme. Loads of people coming to NZ for one to six months would use the scheme I am sure.

Ahh.. HERE IS NZs FIRST DEDICATED BUY BACK COMPANY

www.motorcyclebuyback.co.nz They will have this site up and going by friday.

They will be dealing mainly in Adventure Bikes, Road legal trailies and Tourers
The two guys involved have a long involvement with bike retailing and servicing. The Business will be based locally here in Waihi ( The Epicentre of Adventure) and they will procure bikes to your specs and requirements before you arrive. They will meet you at Auckland airport with the bikes.
They will fit panniers and provide camping gear
Pricing will be competitive against hire rates for periods longer than 3 weeks

Until the site is interactive you can contact peter@superchips.co.nz

    I hope this helps

Actually now that you prod my memory I think one or more where buying a bike from a shop with a guaranteed buy back. Not quite sure of the details as my mates still away at the Burt Munro and South Island tour, so can't check on it.

Quite good from the shop point of view (may have been Botany honda???) )* Bike worth 14k with 15000 on the clock, Guaranteed buy back of 12k still sell after for 14k with 17000 on the clock. Makes sense especially if there's no added owners on the papers and you can use the shop insurance. The above figures are guesses of coarse.

    Motorcycle Buy Back in NZ

I'm new to all this so bear with me! I used to do motorcycle tours and hires in NZ and agree they are very expensive. So we have started a buyback business to help people see the real NZ at a reasonable price. Have a look at www.motorcyclebuyback.com and see if it interests you. Cheers.
