of course they can ask. it's no different to asking a burglar if s/he broke into a house. it's up to you whether you answer it or not. it's common law right to be asked the question, and bill of rights not to answer it. i can just about guarantee though if you say nothing, or say 'i dunno', you'll get a ticket on what the cop thinks.

120kph in a car in town! sheesh talk about dangerous, who was the real danger to the public here? You or the cops?

You should have given them a ticket!

    Count yourself lucky son.
I bet this man could talk me into giving him a ticket on my best of days!

Last Saturday warned three on motorbikes heading to Beaumont plus just about wore out my headlight flasher to get a whole heap of others heading to the rally at different times to get them to slow down. (I was in a mufti).
The ones I stopped had a A1 attitude - and I had no intention of giving them a ticket but they didn't know that when I stopped them - and they looked like a Colgate ad. when they realised they weren't getting a ticket.

me and a mate were cruising down to tauranga in his car last year. We were doing 90 steady the whole way down to conserve fuel (poor students). After going through a small town (50 or 70kmh zone) a cop pulled us over and asked us if we were speeding.

My mate dropped his sacks and said "yeah i was doing about 90 back there, really sorry etc etc"

Then the cop says "oh, nah i meant about 5-10km back down the road, i think i clocked you at 160 but im not sure...." "was it you"

after a short pause "uh no officer"

its kinda sad when he is reduced to asking us if we were the car speeding (like we would have said it was us if we were). I think the deal was that he radioed it in and therefore had to follow it up...? not sure on their protocol but yeh....

For every fluffy story like that i could tell one of a nazi cop hassling the wrong guy.

Man all you have to do is canvas the public and you hear numerous tales of shockers. Even my super law abiding father inlaw has a shocker tale, poor guy, certainly altered his view of HP cops

But its nice you let the bikers off for speeding, i guess its because they had an "A1" attitude toward you huh? Did that make you feel good?

Look, I'm sure lots of us have been stung by the police at one time or another, and okay, not every cop is a lovely fluffy bunny, but can we maybe (just a suggestion):

    a) not attack those that actually are decent, and
    b) avoid attacking each other at all, at least for a bit.

If you or anyone doesn't know what I'm getting at, then look for the thread titled "Respect". I don't want to labour this one- I think most people know which one I'm referring to and why.

As somebody noticed (and you didn't?) I had NO intention of giving out tickets. in the first place.

And no, it didn't make me 'feel' anything but it does make me sad that you are so bitter.

And if you think there are so many 'shockers' out there what do YOU intend to do to improve things??

I believe they can. You have admitted an offence. That is the evidence that could be used against you. As I understand you do not get a reading of your rights unless you are arrested. Then you are told that any thing that you say may be used against you in a court of law aginst you.

Futher to Biffs question if a cop asks you how fast you were going i would construe that as an admission that the officer does not know how fast you were going. On that you could tell him/her the lawfull speed.

On the odd occassion I ask them - just to see how fast they THOUGHT they were going.

Never stop anybody for speeding unless I KNOW how fast they were travelling.

Old scumdog here asked me "if you think there are so many 'shockers' out there what do YOU intend to do to improve things??" Well theres not a whole i can do, but something i try is to "help" cops understand how their attitude comes across, call it an "attack" if you want, i call it an intervention.

In the case of Mr Scumdog, in his words "they get all the attitude they deserve". This is why police are not respected.

Im not saying hes not a decent guy, i dont know him, but his tit for tat attitude will affect how people view the force. Its great he lets speeding bikers off, im sure those bikers are very happy, its helps balance his other side, fantastic, because we all love inconsistancy esp when its bias towards bikers

Im simply trying to help, you know do my bit for society.
