Thumbs up Nelson hoon, rode the Maungatapu Track (next time I will ride Suzy)

Afternoon gents, first Happy New Year to all.

Not entirely adventure bike stuff but not far off, apart from the 43 year old engine on my bike it is still two wheels and handlebars.

We passed thru Nelson on our round the block holiday, had the pleasure of meeting up with Colin (Warewolf) at the endurocross, tired to meet with JATZ as well but ran outa time, next time mate and I will be on Suzy and ready for a ride and a few glasses of hooligan soup afterwards to tell lies over.

Wanted to check out Nordies forks too but didn't make that, next time.

So we did the Nelson side of the Mang track, haven't been up there for years so pretty cool to get back up there, wife and I rode from the caretakers house, great to say neither of us biffed on the way up or down, have to admit the uphill by the bridge and not far from the top were a grunt.

Looking forward to doing a Nelson assault during the year, maybe organize something with you local lads.

Coupla pics of our day, nice and fine it was too.

I just went up to the 1st bridge an hour ago.
Just to test my gps of course. I got a new external aerial and yes it works.

I may have to make sure tomorrow though.

Respectfully you guys are mental. There are way better rides to do around Nelson than killing yourselves up the Maunga - FROM THE WRONG SIDE!!! Shit coming down that side on skinnies can be a bit scary at times.
I went for a MTB tonite up ol codgers, Dun mountain & everyman & their GTs were up there.

    Sorry about the weather tho...

I rode back from the bach this morning for a few jobs in town to keep the natives happy & it took me about 3 hrs to thaw out. Brrrrrr summer??

Heya Padmai, yeah wouldn't have minded a bit better local knowledge of MTB tracks but I haven't been to Nelson in years and I did wonna go back up there.

The weather was shocking ... as you can see but actually on the top was pretty cold, only 9 degs.

Once we finish our motorhome build probably mid year or so we will come to Nelson for a kayaking and MTBing week or two so will find out more then, was hoping to see some adv lads riding but I guess with it being closed to joe public that wasn't gonna happen.

Give us some notice next time & I'll take ya down some off the best descents on the planet - 629 & Peaking Ridge. Obviously 15 minutes of dhill takes a fair bit of climbing too. The single track is mint & all the logs & skinnies have nanalines. Check out the video on vorb

Most of the adv riders just go straight under the rope on the maunga- the caretaker told me it was ok to do. I think they're just trying to stop people with little experience 4wding going over.

Cheers Padmai, will organize a trip to come up and play, maybe take a week or so of and bring MTB and Suzy for a squirk with you fellas.

Went for my first ever KB Adv ride today with Mattsdakar and Alvy? over Waikaia Bush Road and Mt Frye, Alvy did a big biff but is ok, the F650 stood up to it well, less front brakes etc.

G R E A T day out, 441 km for me, everything intact and some cool pics and vids to accompany the stretched stories to come.

We stopped at Garsten for a coupla jars of Hooligan Soup but fuck me the pub was shut!!

From your excellent pix, i am compelled to say that Suzy looks like a MUCH nicer ride, for me, it would have been no contest!

Good stuff, I would love to ride right though and do the loop but we needed a bit more time than we had.

Does anyone know the return loop distance? Nelson- Mang track - Pelorus - Nelson?

From Branford Park at the start of the Maitai...
    37km Nelson-Maungatapu-Pelorus
    92km Nelson-Nelson

On a pushie it'd be easier to go Nelson-Rai-Pelorus (ice cream)-Maungatapu-Nelson.

Yeah I remember the Pelorus side being somewhat easier that is for sure, I also remember the fucking cold tributary I jumped into from one of the small bridges, so cold it felt like I broke my ribs when I hit the water .

Put that on the game plan for the Nelson visit, work is starting to interfere with play time now!!!
