Drifting = big deal. Stiffen the rear susp till it barely moves, lock the diff and surprise, surprise, it oversteers.
When even a few of these guys can drift standard cars like Tiff Needel I'll be impressed.

I prefer Peter Perfect's approach (aka Brockie)...

keep working on your driving, get the things technically correct and you'll be fine...

He won races by driving the best he could under the conditions - not so much against others... more against himself.

I like that approach.

If you want to burn rubber by all means do it. Stay down wind and out of earshot from me... that's all I ask

If I want to burn rubber... I find the incinerator at my place does a damned good job.

The guy who came second in the Ruapuna round had pretty much a stock motor and there's a bit more to it than just stiffening the rear suspension to make it oversteer

This is a motorbiking forum and I am not going to rave on about drifting, but I will say one thing.

It isn't as easy as it looks. Think of it as, if you really wanted to be a fast grip driver, you would need to know the limit of traction. Drifting is just overstepping that limit. In the event that you were to lose control, it becomes a more natural reaction.

The fastest drivers out there are on a very fine line between drift and grip. They are on the edge of grip but not exactly in to drift.

This isn't the same as boyracers burning rubber in a straight line with their brakes on. There are competitive events held.

If I want drifting I just play Underground: 2. The organic tracks rock my socks all the way to somewhere next door.

Yes indeed , and even earlier models. In my case, unintentional and unplanned. Good fun when it happens though. Unfortunately it invariably results in the road in question being added to Mrs Ixion's List of Roads I am Not Allowed to Drive On . She being of an unadventurous nature objects to sideways. The list is a long one. Fortunately she has no idea what I get up to on the bike (though I think she harbours dark suspicions)

'non-stop continuous drift', as you might guess from my new trainspotterish sig. (it might also explain my strange addiction to europop)

If anyone gets the chance to check out the drifters at Pukekohe, I'd recommend it. There are a few average drivers there, but there are also some highly talented individuals. Nothing like quite like seeing a rear wheel car come sideways out of the hairpin with smoke off all 4 tires.

Me too.

Sean Harris on the 2003 Duke DVD talks about competing with himself and treating the actual IoM races as if they were practice. As he rides around he is repeating to himself the words "safe, points" . "Ride safe, hit your points".

I don't know how much psychology training Sean has done but that is all straight out of the sports psych text book. It works too.

I'm wif Scumdog, real cars just need right boot to make 'em do a burnout (and strangely, all real cars are rear-wheel-drive).... you only need the brake for the occasional donut-control and diesel is sumfin you put in tractors....
