I just leave it open a crack, but if I'm riding in fog/cloud and/or it gets cold enough to freeze the fog onto my visor all I can do is open it and suffer the cold - although you can usually open it enough to get limited visibility while still protecting your eyes from rain/bugs

Yeah I remember years ago in the UK they had an advert going around about "remember you have to breath" because they recon'd a number of the winter accidents were caused by riders rugging up so much they were reducing their oxygen intake (presumably city traffic)

I just tried pledge on my helmet and fuck it hurts.

Just clean it with a cloth (don't use paper towels - they scratch!!!!!!) and use product if you desire. The wind is then your friend.

Sorry off to dip helmet in a cold bath.

my helmet is an xr1000 with the vent on the front, if thats open and I'm riding there is no fog problems. occasionally I'll get some fog when I'm stuck at the lights, but it clears up pretty quick when I'm moving. Worth it for the cost of the odd bit of water making it through the vent!
