Costs of getting a ZX-6 on road from UK

    Hi all,

Just joined up and can see that passion for bikes is as strong in NZ as it is in UK.

Just had our PR approved passports back this week and intend to leave for NZ at the end of July.

Intended to buy my mates bike to ship over with us - 1997 ZX-6. Only paying £1700 for it which is a mates good price!

I could buy in NZ but I know the bikes history and as it's my best mates it holds sentimental value to me. However I'm getting concerned and confused about the cost of actually putting it on the road in NZ. Does anyone have experience of this and a breakdown of costs/time to do this? I know that I'll have to pay GST as I'll not have owned it for over 12 months, but what about all the MAF, compliance, registration, shipping costs and insurance? I intend to ship it in the container with all the house stuff. As I'm buying it privately do I need a valutaion/compliance certificate done here in the UK?

So many questions I know, but if anyone can give me a definate answer/list of what to do or link to someone who knows then I'd be eternally gratefull. Loads of people have done this so it can't be too difficult.

    Cheers
    Paul

    importing

to get a reg and warrant expect to pay about 5-600 bucks, you need to get a brake declaration done which usually includes new pads and anything else that needs replacing.
make sure all the importing part is done properly or it may haunt you when trying to get a warrant, i reccomend recording everything.
    try http://www.vtnz.co.nz/
I'm off to the pub, I may be sometime.

Have a search on this site, this has been covered over a couple of times before. I did it with my bike and it wasn't too difficult.

    cheers guys

anyone got an exact breakdown of costs and stages after their own importing experience? LTSA and Customs sites are too vague. Need to know soon if it's worth bringing the bike over. Don't want to be landed with a big bill just to get her on the road - also the missus is going nuts at me thinking it's going to cost thousands of dollars lke the car import figures we have seen! Help!!!

    Costs......

    My cost were as follows:

GST paid based on value of bike (I had owned it for 10 years) I supplied Title to bike which showed purchase price 10 years prior. This was of course changed to NZ dollars from foreign value and gst paid on that price.

Cost for MAF inspection was $80, they came to the house to do inspection, but bike could not be removed from crate within container until MAF arrived. BE SURE your bike is absolutely spotless clean or you'll have to pay additional costs for cleaning before you get ok from MAF.

Cost for VIN & Warrant was approximately $700 and I had a real hassle, but then again it wasn't a stock bike, hope you have better luck than me.

    Insurance cost approximately $800.

If you have all your paperwork, it's not a hassle really, the hassle is the whole VIN and Warrant process.........double check the VIN number when they process, they made mistake on mine and it took me 2 years to get it sorted.

    Safe Journeys to you
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ...

    "WOW!! WHAT A RIDE!"
